Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Jack off his food - vets this morning.

Jack has never been a huge hay eater since I rescued him and his brother last year, but loves his pellets. The last couple of days he's been leaving food and not as eager for meal times. He's still finishing the Burgess Excell pellets (though it takes him longer), Fibafirst sticks and geeens (leaving Natures Menu nuggets that he used to adore, and not touching hay where he used to nibble a bit), so I'm hoping it's not stasis. His eye was watering a bit a couple of days ago, which I read can point to teeth problems?

We're seeing a vet this morning - a small animal one, rather than the exotics vet as he isn't in till monday, and I didn't want to wait. Hopefully this vet will be competent enough, and maybe my boy will just need a dental? Any advice if this is the case? Do buns need to be knocked out for it? Vibes for us please, I hate seeing my little lad not eating.

I'm sorry that Jack is off his food. It certainly sounds as though a dental problem is a possibility from what you have said and I think it's sensible to seek vet advice before he stops eating completely. Yes, I'm afraid that if he needs a dental it's usual for them to have to have an anaesthetic.

Sending loads of vibes for Jack and let us know how he gets on at the vets.

Just home. We saw the vet who has treated my cat a couple of times, a lovely, patient woman, but not an exotics specialist.

Jack's heart, lungs and guts all sound fine. She used a scope to check his teeth and couldn't see and large or obvious spurs, but there was a touch of redness on his lower left side, and it had been his left eye that was watering. He's also lost some weight, from 1.8kg down to 1.6kg. He's not dehydrated, and is still passing poop and urine.

She gave him a pain relief(?) injection and some Loxicom to take over the weekend in case the redness in his mouth is indicative of pain and reluctance to eat. I'm upping his Burgess pellets and giving plenty of Fibafirst sticks, as he's still eating these happily, and we're booked in to see the specialist vet on Monday afternoon. Fingers crossed he picks up a bit with the pain relief and gets some more grub into him!

This sounds like a good plan. Hopefully with the pain relief he will remain comfortable and eating until Monday.

Hope it's just a minor spur that needs rasping off. The pain relief should take him over the weekend. If he seems to get worse, you may need an antibiotic for him in case the redness has turned into infection. An ulcer sometimes does when the offending tooth is still bothering them. Just keep an eye on him and follow vet's instructions.

If he's still pooping and eating, then hopefully he'll be OK to last until Monday :)

Good vibes for you both x

Update: we had a good Friday and Saturday - Jack took the Loxicom on Saturday morning and continued eating pellets and fibafirst sticks, still no hay but not surprised since he had ample amounts of 'nice' food.

On Sunday I couldn't get him to take any Loxicom at all, and it was stressing both of us out. He was still eating on Sunday so I didn't think much of it. Today though he's not interested at all  He's nibbled at a couple of bits of cabbage, and I've seen him drinking, but I don't think there's anything coming out the other end. I feel awful, he's obviously in pain somewhere, and I should've tried harder with the Loxicom yesterday! We're seeing the specialist vet in an hour who can hopefully advise more on if it is this small inflammation in his mouth that's the problem. In the meantime, I'm setting up the indoor pen to bring him inside and better keep an eye on him. Any spare vibes would be much appreciated!

I'm sorry. Medicating a rabbit who doesn't want to be medicated is never easy. Sending lots of vibes for him. I hope the appointment with the specialist goes well.

Good luck at the vets, hope everything is ok, and it's just a bothersome spur, which can be easily dealt with.

Our exotics vet is very good. He was able to find a Something going on, possibly an old broken tooth. I highly doubt Jack and William's old owners ever sought vet treatment for them, and it's frustrating not to know their medical history. As Jack hasn't been eating, and I'm not able to administer by myself, he's been admitted. I've left plenty of his own food, and he'll be syringe fed if he's not eating. Micheal was able to change his schedule and fit in Jack's dental tomorrow morning, possibly with X-rays, and if all goes well I'll collect him tomorrow evening. I do trust my vet, and I know Jack's in good hands, but there's no escaping that horrible, soul-deep ache of leaving the vets without the pet you brought in.

Sounds as though Jack's in very good hands, although I can imagine how difficult it was to leave him. I find it's always better to find an actual definite cause for not eating though and it seems like your vet has done that.

Lots of vibes for his dental tomorrow. I hope it goes well.

Oh I'm sorry, I know how you feel!

He's in very good hands by the sounds of it. Sending vibes for his dental tomorrow. He will feel much better once his teeth are attended to!

Waiting waiting on a phone call this afternoon to let me know how it went. I could cope with that, only now William has left his morning nuggets!! He likes to sit in his hay as he eats, so I'm not sure how much he's eaten today. He was happy as a clam last night and has been stuffing his face as normal. Maybe he's missing Jack? They're not together, but their runs butt up to one another's? Blooming bunnies!!

Vibes for William. Perhaps he also picked up on your own stress?

Can you tempt him with some herbs or something treat like?

Almost as soon as I posted, the vet rang - Jack started eating again after he was admitted, didn't need to be syringe fed, but they kept him overnight to be sure. Well didn't the little booger go and 'stuff his face' today, as Micheal put it! He hoovered up all the pellets I brought it, some kale, some dandelion and fibafirst! He decided not to do the dental, as it would have been because Jack wasn't eating, and I didn't want to knock him out unnecessarily. So he's been sent home and I'll keep an eye on him. If he stops eating again, then the dental and X-rays will be scheduled.

As for William, I'm not too sure. I've bought lots of tasty things, and he's had a bit of a nibble. I'm hoping he was just morose, but I've still got some painkiller which I've been advised I can give him if need be. Never a dull moment with rabbits!

No you're right - we could all do with a few duller moments I think

Hopefully he'll pick up a bit when Jack's home - or is he already home? x

That seems good news. Hopefully they both continue eating.

Your specialist sounds great. It's nice to have that peace of mind.

Happy to report that both buns seem to be eating again! William was back to his usual bouncy self this morning, which was great to see! Not sure what was going on with them both, but I'm not going to complain! Thanks to everyone for thinking of us!
