Digging box

Is it a good idea? Mine don't dig on the grass so are they less likely to use a digging box? What did you use as a box and what did you put in it?

Ours is the tray from an old hamster cage, filled with first some lizard sand we had lying around (the hamster rejected it) and then soil. Monty regularly gets the soil caught in his fur, so we have an endless cycle of sweeping it up and having to put new soil in (so if you do do one, I'd recommend putting it somewhere easy to clean behind them!) He occasionally digs in it (more often he digs everywhere but his digging tray), but more importantly, it's usually his favourite place for having a flump in the evenings while we have the television on - it provides a different sort of texture/temperature for him if he wants to relax.

My rabbits don't dig the grass really (Aboleth kinda rakes it and Lopsy's dug in the past!) but they both enjoy a digging box! Lopsy digs through dirt and eats whatever he finds  and Aboleth enjoys digging through a deep layer of litter (paper pellets in our case). I need to find a suitable thing to put in for them as our dirt is too full of roots really and Lopsy isn't as keen on digging the pellets!

Thank you, I think I'll give it a go. I have no idea what to use for the digging box, do I want something quite high at the sides so they can have a good layer of dirt to dig through, and also so it doesn't go straight out of the box (although I am expecting some mess!) also would normal compost be ok?

I thought I'd get a cardboard box to start with and fill it with compost just to see what they think. They could not care less

I've just made a dig box out of an underbed storage container and some kids' play sand. Our two bunnies have never been happier! They were in it straight away, and haven't left since. We were inspired to do it because Noodle has a tendency to hide in the corner of the living room and scrabble on the carpet; hopefully the dig box will discourage her from digging elsewhere. The box is high-sided enough to keep the sand in, until they jump out when it carries on their feet. I'm thinking of getting a patch of carpet to go under it, in the hope that they wipe their feet!

Lovely photos!
I need to get a dig box as my two rascals have just started digging the grass in their run. [emoji33]
Luckily they cannot dig out as I put mesh under the turf.[emoji1]

What would those in the know recommend to fill the box? Play sand or just soil from garden?
