  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Swollen lip

Alicia

Izzy has a swollen lip or a lump on her lip. There's no injury that I can see, and she's eating fine. What could this be? I picked some dandelions for her today whilst I was out walking the dogs, apart from that she's eaten the same as normal but I've not held her in a few days so I don't really know how long it's been there. She's got a vets appointment tomorrow morning but does anyone have any idea what it could be? I'm worrying and thinking the worst things

And you know you're a regular at the vets when the receptionist recognises your voice on the phone

Sorry they're not very clear but there's definitely a size difference between each side. The swollen side is her right side

Could she have been stung ? Can you look under the swollen part by gently pulling her lip up, if she will let you.

She didn't mind me touching it that time, her top lip on the right side is quite soft and puffy. It doesn't seem as swollen as it was earlier

It looks ok this morning, the vet thoroughly checked her over and she's fine, I got her vaccinations done whilst I was there so she's all set on that front for now. He did say that he thinks she has a bit of arthritis, as she can be a bit unsteady on her feet especially her back left leg but he doesn't want to do anything about it yet but if I notice it getting worse I should take her back

Glad to hear that she's OK. Was it the Myxo-RHD Vaccination she had ?

Yes that was the one :)

Has she had the RHD2 Vaccine (Filavac) ? The Nobivac Myxo-RHD does not cover for RHD2. If she has not had the Filavac I would make sure this is done ASAP. Some Vets say that it can be given 2 weeks after the Nobivac. Although a full immune response to Nobivac does take 3 weeks, so some Vets prefer to leave a 3 week gap.
