Doe to doe bonding?

mokwa32

Alpha Buck
Any thoughts welcome please. I'm considering a female companion for Belle as her two previous bonds were boys and we lost them. Her 3rd bond a gentle buck failed she was dominant over him. Belle is now 4 and more chilled out than she used to be I'm assuming with age. I do want to try again to bond her so I was going to get a baby mainly to socialise with my children and other pets and myself as a part of the family. And keep the new addition indoors until after her spay. I know it's all depending on personality. I just wondered if anyone has any advice please on doe to doe bonding success. Or is it best to try again with another boy.

The problem with babies I guess is that they are an unknown quantity ...how they are as kits might be different from the puberty to waiting for spay period which again might be different to their adult personality. I am a huge fan of letting bunnies meet to enable me to get some kind of gauge as to their feelings towards each other. I would try more difficult bonds in the future (ie same sex or groups) but not "blind", I'd want them to meet first.

I don't think advice or rules would be any different, if it goes well then great, if it doesn't then apply the usual strategies for a difficult bond. What do you mean about losing the 2 boys - did they bond with her?

Hello..

Yes her first partner was like her soul mate. He sadly died. We then bonded her to a rescue boy who we now think was ancient and sadly he passed away not long after cause unknown likly age. I tried a third bond with a lovely buck but he was so gentle and I think she had enough of it all. So she wouldn't bond to him. So she has had a long break. I just feel it's the right time to start again looking for my options.

I know the rule of thumb with babies and temperaments and not knowing the personality types but there are pro's too. Seems it's about weighing up pro's and con's. I am undecided. Either way its a gamble. I might give up out of sheer confusion.

So she bonds well with boys - they just sadly passed away. I'd be tempted to go male - female pairing then. Maybe third boy bun was just poor timing or the wrong bun. I'd probably avoid the (usually) more difficult girl to girl as Belle has a history of getting on with boys.2 out of 3 ain't bad - beats my record  And don't give up - your doing the right thing by our girl

I agree with J&B. Because she's already had successful bonds to bucks I'd bond her to a other buck.

Doe/doe bonds are the hardest because of their territorial nature and honestly, getting a baby female would likely make the situation harder when it comes to bonding after a behaviour change at puberty.

I'd stick to the buck & doe pairing but consider rescuing a male who is a year old, maybe 2 so she will be the older in the pair.

Thank you J&B and Daphnepheobe.

You have both really helped me make my mind up and I think you are both so right. I'm going to stick to a male for the bond. I have looked in our rescue but they rarely have many rabbits and the ones they have never seem to be compatible with our family life such as "No children preffered" "no other pets" ect so I'm going to keep looking. But for a boy. I refuse to go to P@H even though id be tempted if I seen them. I'l check again though. Thank you so much. You really helped me to nip my temptation in the bud for a girl. And yes I think the 3rd bond failed because it was too soon for her. And she does like boys she used to go over to my other bunny run (She free roams) and sit beside my other buck who was bonded to another doe he would groom her through the mesh.. his wife was not happy about that. So okay. On the look out for a boy.. x

Best of luck in your look.
Not sure where you area, but if you provide your location people may be able to suggest other rescues to you x
