Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

    Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

E-cuniculi infection - Flossie

Is there a specialist near you?? Thats what saved our girl. Our vets in eastbourne east sussex are phenominal but ec needs a specialist. We had to travel a fair distance lunas final bill with ec in control and managed including hire car was nearly £500. Pay it again and again for the time it gave us and the quality of life it gave her. We dont have that kind of money the vet let us pay in installments.

I will call my vet see what anti biotic was prescribed. She was also given cortosteroids.

Hi there. Sorry I missed this earlier. Thank you for your help.

We have specialists at the Royal D i c k vet small animal hospital within about 40 miles, though I know Flossie would find the car journey tough right now. I'm trying to weigh up the odds of what's likely to happen for a Very elderly bunny in these circumstances and will stick to local care for the basics e.g bloods, X-rays etc before considering moving her. Her breathing seems a little worse this evening, but still munching away on her sick bed treats of watercress, rocket and coriander.

I agree that in Flossie's case lots of stress from travelling would not be great. I know that you have always done everything possible for your Rabbits and you also make your decisions based on what is right for the individual Rabbit. Flossie sounds to be comfortable within herself which for a frail elderly lady Bun is as important as any treatment she receives.

One of my mantras when caring for a sick Rabbit is that just because some treatments/diagnostics/surgery are possible to do it is not always right (for an individual Rabbit) to do them. Quality of life is always more important than quantity, IMO. I have been in that very situation myself on more than one occasion, including right now with one of my elderly Rabbits.

I hope that Flossie has had a comfortable night, sending lots of vibes for her xx

Thank you to all. Sadly, I made the difficult decision to say farewell to my dear Flossie this morning. She had a terrible struggle overnight, and despite my best efforts to manage her, both me and my vet felt her ultimate prognosis for regaining any meaningful hind leg function was very, very limited. Her tremors had worsened significantly in a short space of time.

She went off too sleep very peacefully, after a big breakfast of strawberries, banana, fresh grass and parsley.

I brought her home to let her bunfriend, George, say his goodbyes, before dropping her off at our local pet crematorium. He cleaned up her face for around half an hour, bless his little heart.

We'll all miss our gentle friend, Flossie. A beautiful animal inside and out. Safe now with my many, fabulous bunnies from years gone by, not least the Dutchies, who'll be showing her around I hope.

I'm sorry to hear this. But you made the right decision, and it was very selfless of you, as I know how much she meant to you xx
 
I'm sorry. I know that it is hard to make that decision but sometimes it is the kindest thing you can do.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Your love for her shines through. Its never an easy decision but I feel you timed it right, the ultimate act of kindness. Sleep tight Flossie x
 
So sorry you lost her, you did all you could. I agree with Jane, it's got to be about the quality of their life, although surgery/treatment etc may be possible it's not always in their best interest.

Thank you very much to each and every one of you. We've had a little pigeon visiting the garden today and I'm looking on this as a little sign that Flossie is safe and at peace. George is lost without her, though I'll try a bond with my existing duo in time (Hattie and Hamish, though Hattie is a formidable, ++ grumpy and elderly French lop).
