More GI Stasis!

Hi guys

Me again! Peter was very quiet this week but seemed to be eating and pooping ok. Then yesterday he didn't eat any hay and his poops were a lot smaller than usual. So i started him on some pain meds and metacam which i have in the house. He seems brighter today but still refusing his hay. He is eating everything else like a complete gorb tho and followed me up and down the stairs this morning begging me for food when I opened the fridge!

He got his teeth checked under sedation back on 12 May and the vet said his teeth were fine and there was no sign of any spurs. So I don't think it is his teeth that is bothering him this time either.

This is now the 4th time since september that Peter has had colic. I am at a loss of what to do to prevent this! he is not yet even 2 years old!! he has been getting a steady diet of readigrass, dried forage and A&P pellets. I supplement this with some fresh herbs, dandelions, spinach, rocket, watercress and the odd small bit of apple or carrot. His poops had been large and golden and he was doing great. i want to get him neutered and paired up but literally everytime I go to book him in its as if he knows and develops colic!

I feel like I am the worst bunny mum ever! Its always been my intention to neuter him and pair him, and I regret it hasn't been sooner. I've had a lot of pressures on me the last year and I know I should have it done and dusted already but I know it takes time and with working full time, finishing a 3yr course, setting up a business and running my own home by myself, time is not something I've had a lot of. Terrible excuses I know! :( i've been keeping an eye on my local rescues for female bunnies the last few weeks who need husbunds, but they all only have bucks.

Anyway, my question is could there be something underlying that is causing this? Like worms? Depression from being lonely?

I am trying to find patterns to find the cause.

First time back in Sept I literally gave him a bit of broccoli (wasn't the freshest, bit limp, in hindsight, bad idea!) and within 5 bites he was in pain. I'm not sure if he already had the start of something or if the broccoli was the actual cause of it, seemed very fast!?:?

Second time start of april, he had been out in the garden and had probably eaten a few things he shouldn't (i did spend the entire time pushing his fluffy butt on to the closest bit of grass). However, this time it also was his teeth that was the problem because I had been overdoing the fresh foods and he had stopped eating hay (which I cant believe i didn't pick up sooner!!)

Third time was May 12th and he needed meds. I had been feeding him lots of grass and think it was a bit too much for him. His teeth were checked here and they were a-OK.

Then fourth time has been really from say start of June when he has been a bit odd. Can't really pin point it but he has started pooping outside the litter tray over the hall landing and in the bathroom the last week(???) and hes sitting in a different place and looks really sad. So I started spending more time with him and he got back out into the garden for the first time in a few weeks- change of diet??? Posionous plant???

He hasn't been getting outside much because of my neighbours dog but there does seem to be a correlation with him going outside and getting a colic attack. Is it possible he just has a really sensitive tummy? Could he be depressed? Could he have worms?

Sorry for the ramble, but every time this happens it breaks my heart! He's my special boy and I need an outsider's point of view as my family and bf don't understand bunnies

I have a stasis prone bun and after months of tests and eliminating certain foods we discovered that he does in fact have a very sensitive tummy. The main culprit was pellets. It took us a long time to figure this out because we were convinced it couldn't be pellets because he'd had them from day 1. This all started at around 2 years of age. He had xrays, a ct scan, blood tests and an ultrasound and they all came back fine.
I would look again at his diet and maybe make a list of everything he eats and the quantities. How many pellets does he get? Is he a good hay eater?
I'm also sure that I've seen somewhere that some buns have problems with readigrass so maybe someone will be able to give you some more info on that too.
Xx

I'm sorry that Peter has got digestive problems again. You've had his teeth examined recently, so it's very likely not to be teeth that's causing the problem.

In some rabbits these issues seem to be caused by their diet. I'm not saying his diet is not healthy. From what you've described it seems fine. However, what will be tolerated by one rabbit maybe different for another. Trying to find patterns to establish the cause is a good way to start. Other forum members have had similar problems and it's sometimes just trial and error, trying to establish what kicks the problem off.

Have a look at this thread (long read!) http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/showthread.php?461140-Sylar-s-stasis-thread&highlight=sylar It took Roxyroller ages to establish what was the issue for Sylar. I think he is now on a pellet-free diet.

Haha I see she's just posted :D

It's a very long thread so I apologise in advance! It took a long time to get to the bottom of the problem though. Probably longer than it needed to be really!

Thanks guys! Im home from work and hes been pooping and picking at hay which is all good! He seems bright and is grooming my shoe!

I tried to take him off pellets and feed him grass but tht gave him gas. So then i gave him just readigrass n a very small amount of pellets and he went super skinny it freaked me out!

So he is getting about half an egg cup of a&p pellets. Hes super fussy about hay and literally readigrass seems to be all he will eat! I dont know what way to play this! Any advice guys?

Sometimes he seems a little snuffy and makes a weird sound. He does this when he runs. I just assumed this was him trying the grunt. They odd time when hes sitting...... he has no discharge and doesnt appear to be wheezing.

He is a bit of a runty french lop so im wondering if it cud be his heart or chest? Honestly i just cant put my finger on this and its driving me insane!!

I think probably the best way forward is to take Peter back to your vet and get him to do some very simple examinations such as sounding his chest, taking some bloods maybe. Then you can also discuss the problem and ask his advice on establishing whether there is a dietary cause.

I have a vet appt booked 2moro afternoon and will give peter his meds later. Hopefully vet will find something!!! Its awful not knowing the culprit as im sure you understand roxy!

Where is the best place online for hay? I ordered ings and timothy from hay for pets but quality was not great which is why partly, i think ive ended up in this mess!

From what you've said (and sorry to hear you're going through this again) I would take Peter to the vet to exclude any respiratory distress. Once the vet pronounces him fit and healthy, apart from his eating (teeth are probably still OK?) then I would direct attention to his diet.

I would be reluctant to cut out foods that are sustaining him if he's going down with an infection of some sort, as you don't want to deplete his reserves.

Bunnies that are fighting infections as well as anything else can be quite stressed - get the vet to take his temperature (though I doubt it will be significant).

These are just my random thoughts :)

Ok so rabbit specialist vet listened to everything and felt all round him. The conclusion was the building work at my neighbours has probably stressed him off eating hay. So i popped into p@h on way home and got him some diff types of hay and dried forage. He actually ate some birch leaves within 5 mins of being home from my hand! Yay!

Hopefully once building work finishes, he gets neutered i can look to bond him with a hay loving wifebun! Will be keeping a v.close eye on him!

This is very good news Beebop :D

I hope he continues to improve and get better x

Thanks mightymax!

Hes very bright and eager this evenibg, just like his old self.

Still not eating much hay! Rathet hes just picking out the herby bits! Will he starve himself? Im with holding pellets this evening as hes had plenty today and i want him back on hay but hes being captain stubborn!! Hes clearly starving and a lil thin! Hay vibes needed!

You're welcome :)

Sending hay vibes. I think if he's had some pellets, then a little withholding will be OK. Make sure he's eating well though .. Have you tried a bit of readigrass, or maybe a fibafirst stick or two?

Try him on some different varieties of hay :)
The Hay Experts do a sample pack that you can try. The Green Oat Hay usually goes the fastest!
https://www.thehayexperts.co.uk/taster-selection-pack.html
And I'm pretty sure that www.timothyhay.co.uk will send out a sample if you message them on fb.
P@H also do a 'Herby Harvest' hay that goes down well and more recently I tried my buns on a timothy hay brick from Galens Garden. It's messy but they love it!
https://galensgarden.co.uk/shop/forage-bricks/ looks like the Timothy have sold out for now though but worth a try in the future :)

Thanks guys! Ive ordered the sample pack off the hay experts!

Hes in good form again this morning! He ate a large handful of readigrass overnight so at least hes beginning to go back to hay!

I still worry its somehow his teeth! He sounded a bit slobbery when eating his pellets this morning but maybe he was just starving and eating too quick?! He will be getting them checked when getting neutered in a couple of weeks! Hopefully im wrong and his teeth are still fine like a month ago!!

Think i need somw rescue remedy!!

Yes, have a few drops and calm down :)

I hope there's nothing wrong with his teeth, but it's good they will be checked when he is neutered. Not long to wait!!
