  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Preventing flystrike!

Has anyone got any extra tips for preventing flystrike?

I'm cleaning his cage daily, litter trays twice a day, and I'm picking him up twice a day and checking his back end is clean, I'm also using a flystrike protectant spray, though I'm not sure how effective that is.

I'm just really paranoid after I saw a shearling with flystrike last year, it was horrid, she survived and has had a healthy lamb this spring

If you're keeping your rabbit clean, then that's the best thing to prevent it! If anything does get stuck in the fur I use a comb to pull it out ASAP but usually the buns get to it first. Flystrike sprays aren't really needed if your rabbit is capable of cleaning himself and if you're keeping his environment clean too - as you may know, usually only old, disabled, overweight and arthritic rabbits have trouble in that department. I applaud you for your dedication to your bunny, he must be very lucky.

If you ever have any trouble or think your rabbit needs some preventative, talk to your vet. :)

naohren has given good advice :D

I don't use preventatives - chemical ones. Just being observant and combing regularly ...

Thank you, like I said, he is checked twice daily for any signs of flys, I spray the prevention around the cage to prevent flies around where he goes to the toilet, it says you can in the bottle, it's on,y the cheap Johnsons one
