Hello - Week 2 of Stasis (Long read sorry)

Spoke to the vet, he's going in on Friday for a day trip instead of appointment, at least it means if there is anything wrong, he can get treatment on the spot.

Thanks all, speak soon. Rich

Hi dudes,

Hope you're well. So we took the bigman to the vets on Friday, they did a full dental check and couldn't find anything wrong with him, also checked his eyes out and they were fine too but the protuding third eye lid when he's at a funny angle.

Past two nights, I haven't changed his litter out of curiosity and his eyes haven't wept at night thus far, I'm going to test this a bit longer to see. The vet also took detailed notes and has forwarded them to a specialist. Hear back from this week, hopefully it is irritation but given my natural pessimistic ways I'm patiently awaiting the report from the specialist. All the best, Rich

Have you had any news yet Rich? How's the little man (oops, sorry bigman :)) doing?

Nothing as yet :( Phoned up at lunch and awaiting news.

Ever since he was ill in May, if you go to stroke his belly when he's fast asleep he makes the cutest little snore, that's where we coined bigman from as he sounds like an old man snoring! :D

Hope you won't have to wait too much longer ...

Old man snoring!

So the first specialist came back to us today via the vet. First port of call is Baytril for 10 days. We have only changed his litter 3 times this week as an experiment and he has only had weepy eyes/nose twice in the past 5 days instead of daily. His 3rd eyelids look slightly less irritated too but still I don't know if this is progress but he is fine in himself, was charging around the downstairs of the house last night and had a roam this morning.

After that it's onto a CT & XRays if it doesn't clear up or gets any worse. One potential DD is a mass on chest/head so kinda praying it's not at the moment. Given his past 6 months, that would really be unfair! I kinda hope it's teeth related & hasn't been visable as in the gums on inspection, hopefully that is more manageable. Masses can be treatable apparently so that's something. Urgh.

He's spent this morning enjoying the wonderful sunshine alongside ruff his doggy companion...

Bless him  IME if a mass in the chest (Thymoma) is an issue it is usually both eyes that bulge, not just one. So hopefully that is not what is causing Siddi's eye to protrude. I hope he continues to remain well within himself xx

Sadly both eyes do bulge or rather the third eye lids bulge when he dips his head down in a certain position. It seems to be more 'angry' on one side though.

I really hope you'll find an answer - I like the idea of him still charging around the place. A good sign :)

I hope it isn't a thymoma, but will wait until you've got more results in before commenting ..

Vibes for you all x

Hi folks,

Bad news I'm afraid.

Sid had an event overnight which has resulted in back leg paralysis. I put food down for him at 11:30pm and woke up at 2am fully expecting to find him below my bed in his usual spot on his heat pad but he was still across the corridor in his room sat trying to get his balance. I have absolutely no idea what is the cause though, his last seizures I've heard as I'm a very light sleeper, I don't know how his legs can just stop working at full function.

You can see properly @ 1:10 his movement and how it has been today --> https://vimeo.com/245852834

He is eating fine, pooping & actually eating hay again and eating pellets, we have found a way to make his cage jump free in and out too.

I didn't want to take him back to the vet today as we have all his meds here and we just want him to be as comfortable as possible for the moment.

He does have a referral appointment @ Scott Vet in Bedford tomorrow @4pm (Thankfully managed to stay at home today/tomorrow)- this is a gold credited RWAF vet and is a bit quieter than his usual vet (has a small exotics private ward) which he was on a ward with cats and dogs previously. Just praying the traffic is ok on the M1 tomorrow!

I guess we will do some scans perhaps tomorrow and make a decision on what to do. I've read on SOME cases that mobility can come back, we are prepared to give him as much time as possible and don't want to consider the e word at the moment, given bar his mobility he is his normal self.

For tonight, we will stop the Baytril as he was doing fine on Panacur & Metacam.

Does anyone have any experience with legs going like this? Thank you all.

Rich

Really sorry to hear this Rich :(

Yes, looks painfully familiar to me, but there can be so many diagnoses for what I've just seen with Siddi:

I am glad you're seeing the vet tomorrow. You'll take that clip along and see what they think. Not the end, but just a sign of what might be happening.

Vibes for you and Siddi x

Oh Rich I am sorry to read of Siddi's latest problem  The fact that you are seeing an excellent Vet tomorrow is very fortuitous as I am sure that they will give you reliable and realistic advice about what options are available regarding further diagnostics and treatment.

I know that you will do whatever is in Siddi's best interests, you have done so all the way through his illnesses. Please update RU when you can and in the meantime I am sending Siddi lots of positive vibes xx

Thank you both. He had a fairly good night, no Baytril and his balance is miles better. He's fallen over a few times collecting cecotropes but in general he is stable. His mobility has improved a tad too when moving. A few times, he's hopped with both hind legs being pulled underneath instead of tip toeing. I think it's now or never to get him to the vet so fingers crossed everything goes to plan, as much as I want him to stay at home for a few more days and see some more linear progress, I think this is in his best interests.

We've ordered him a bun wheel chair from Texas today too, so hopefully next week he's at home, he can use that as a spot of physiotherapy.

One thing to note today, he is mad for hay again and gnawing wood. I seem to remember the first time he came home, he was on all these meds and it happened - Is he trying to build up his gut flora again? We will CC him for the next few days when I get back I think to make sure his poops stay at normal size.

Evening,

We are back from the vets up in Beds. Sid has been kept in overnight so that they can conduct bloods and an xray tomorrow to see if it is Thymoma as one of the vet's DD is that. His hind legs on tests were fine, which means it's likely to be something neurological in the spine causing problems. However, with the fact it improved overnight, they're hopeful panacur might solve it if it is EC. He even hoped back into his cage quite well to be fair.

Options don't seem to be great if it is thymoma, there's some things that can be done like Chemo/Radiotherapy but we will have to see.

I know this has perhaps been coming for a while, but 7 1/2 years I've seen his fluffy face almost every day for hours each day, even at the vets he tried to climb up onto me at one point and even my mother came for the consultancy as he's popular with her too, he let her stroke his head, which usually doesn't happen! Argh, pets.

Guess there's a lot of useful information on this thread throughout our chat, I might condense meds/advice into a spreadsheet in the hope others can use it. Need to keep busy tonight!

I hope that the diagnostics do not reveal a Thymoma and that Siddi's hind leg issues will continue to improve. I am sure you will miss him whilst he is at the Vets overnight. Hopefully there will be an update about how he is doing tomorrow morning x

Hi Rich :)

I really hope it isn't thymoma.

However, I am glad he's been hopping reasonably well. It's such an unknown quantity with E.C. and what Panacur can and can't achieve. The results are often so variable. Some say the conditions it's created can't be reversed but I have seen it happen, so hopefully Sid will improve and keep improving.

Vibes x

Sorry to report that it is a mass, it's occupying between 55-70% of his thorax region at present. The vet said that naturally he won't have much time left (months) at most.

We have tried to refer to a radiotherapy clinic (one in Cambridge, who are fully booked until the end of January) and one in Essex (Haven't heard back yet)

I just think given the determination of him, he would want time instead of anything else. Even though he has stiff hindlegs, he still decided after originally being scared in travelling to start exploring the consultation room yesterday, the nature of the ND. Do you know of any of clinics near major motorways I could try if either of you have past experience? We are J9 of the M1, close to the A1 and M25.
