  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Slowly dying

New Kit
Hi,
I'm new and getting desperate.
I think my boy is dying.
Last winter he became paralysed, the vet wanted to put him down, I said no and he was given antibiotics instead. He pulled through and started hopping again! we put him outside as he was okay, he was using his litter tray and everything. But within the last few weeks he hasn't been using his litter tray, he's been urinating anywhere, he hasn't been cleaning himself and has had faces and urine all around his bottom. I have also realised how skinny he is, he joints, oh, they're just horrible, I can't bear to touch them, there's nothing there.

I don't want to take him to my local vet, not after he told me to kill him twice (Once when he wasn't ill)
Do I get him put down or do I let him try and survive? he doesn't do much, he hides all day in his room.

Thank you.

Hi, I'm sorry your rabbit is so poorly  sadly many vets do not know enough about rabbits, your rabbit really needs to be seen by a rabbit savvy vet, rabbits are classed as exotics. If you post your location hopefully someone can recommend a nearby expert vet.

Sending lots of vibes for your rabbit.

Hi there and welcome to the Forum

I'm so sorry to hear about your rabbit :(

I have cross posted a thread in Rabbit Chat, where more people may see it, to ask for a vet in your area.

A second opinion from a good vet will hopefully shed light on what you should do.

Please keep posting - we are here to support you xx

Your best vet is in Andover - quite easy for you to reach. Anton Vet has John Chitty, an exotics specialist, and I believe they also have another specialist as well now. They are situated by Asda. I can't recommend them highly enough. Hope they can help.

The other specialist at Anton, Violaine, is also excellent.

I'm only chandlers ford so if you need any help, please PM me

Sorry I didn't reply to your email Catherine. I put it one side to answer ... and then forgot. Will do so later. x

I agree with the above. I was referred to John Chitty by my own vet (I live in Havant) and found him and his staff to be excellent and wish they were nearer so I could use them regularly.

Can't agree more than with the experts above. We have found a rabbit specialist in Cardiff on the advice of those on these forums and it was a good move. They are much more knowledgeable and prepared to help out with tests etc than our regular vet who was struggling. Good luck.

Your bunny needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible. Do not let your past experience with a vet that may have been to hasty to recommend putting him down keep you from seeking help.
I had a bunny had a poor prognosis for the future, but she was still happy so we managed any discomfort while she continued to enjoy her life.
