  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I think before we start more speculation about what could cause blood in urine it would be best to establish that it is actually blood and not just dark urine caused by various plant pigments in the diet. In the UK it is possible to buy Urine Test strips from a Pharmacy. They would identify if the discolouration is blood or not. Or you can buy them online, this is an example of a Veterinary Brand

I have some urine test strips and I test at home before I consult the vet.

You can buy them here ...

Once you know whether it's blood or not, you can identify the cause.

Please don't worry at the moment, as it may just be caused by plant pigments - it's very common :)

Ok ill visit vet this week so ill ask him
Thanks for the answers!

That really is the best idea. No-one on here is a qualified Vet and it is always more appropriate to obtain a qualified opinion when a Rabbit presents with a worrying symptom. All we can do is offer suggestions of what might be wrong with the Bunny but that can never replace the input from a good Vet. It sounds as though your Vet has done a lot for Thumper and has also sought advice from other Vets. I am sure that you will continue to receive good advice and hopefully Thumper will continue to make progress :)

Back from vet again.
Back leg open wound (hole) is almost closed we are gonna use some SSD cream the next weeks for prevention to any contamination. But the bad thing is that the same leg broke cause of the osteomyelitis. That happened because the bones with osteomyelitis go ''weak'' from contamination and eventually can broke very easily. Poor Thumper thats why i saw her last days moving a bit different. Vet also told me that cause of the place where the broke is , it cant be fixed.
Generally now all feets are free from pus and abscesses but there are many brokes on all her legs. Vet believes that she is very strong rabbit and has much life inside her.
We will continue the visits every 2 weeks to check on her.
Any experience with broken bones ? Now she cant hop
While we had the gauze on the leg was able to move better than now. But vet told me not to use again

I am sorry to hear that Thumper isn't doing better, but encouraged that your vet feels she is fighting on :)

I am glad the abscesses have gone. Did the vet have any suggestions regarding the broken bones?

Sadly no. There are many broken bones on the 3 legs that cant be healed cause she is moving and puts pressure on them.
Vet just believe that all we can do is give meloxicam to help her feel better.

I am very sorry to hear the extremely bad news  Please note that I have no qualifications in Veterinary Medicine, the following comments are made from what I understand about the situation from an unqualified perspective. Fractures that occur due to disease within the bones (pathalogical fractures) cannot heal  If there were just one fracture in one leg then amputation of the leg may be an option. Or in some cases a specialist orthopaedic Surgeon may be able to remove the diseased part of the bone and insert a surgical implant, using various 'high tech' complex procedures. Multiple operations may be needed along with aggressive antibiotic therapy going on for many months. Significant pain would be involved and so very strong analgesic cover would be absolutely essential. But with wide-spread osteomyelitis causing numerous fractures in all four limbs then there really is no viable treatment

Your Vet obviously feels that it is appropriate to continue with palliative care for now and to review Thumper's situation every 2 weeks. I hope that Thumper continues to remain bright and that she is not in too much pain x

Sadly to me this sounds like a terminal situation. I wish it wasn't and I hope for a miracle, as I know how much Thumper means to you and how you are both fighting together.

Sending you love and hugs at this time x

Sending lots of hugs. I hope that Thumper can remain comfortable. She is certainly a very brave rabbit.

Yeah thats what the vet thinks exactly. We just gonna give much love to Thumper and live a normal life with little pain as long as possible. Till now she is happy bunny , if i see her in bad state we gonna put her to sleep

That is the most compassionate thing to do, even though it will be awful for you x

I agree. It's very sad, but she will have felt all the love you've given her. Nothing is wasted. Her life is a blessing

Today i saw blood in the urine. And this time more.
It was sure blood and also there was a blood clot.
I worry so much , im leaving for 5 days tonight and my mum is going to give the medication.
I read a bit on web and in most cases they did a spray to the bunny as its more likely a cancer related.
You think Thumper will be fine for 5 days and go to vet next week . She is acting normal , eating , drinking etc

Personally no, I dont think she can wait for 5 days to be seen by a Vet. I strongly advise you to take her to a Vet before you go away tonight. Or at the very least arrange for your Mum to get her to a Vet first thing tomorrow.

Hi lefteris.

Really sorry to hear this update on Thumper.

Can your Mum ring the vet first thing in the morning? Is it possible for you to save a sample of the urine with blood so that if the vet requests to see it, she can take it in?

She peed 3 more times , no sign of blood at all.
Confused. I was yesterday on vet and talked about the red colour and she seems not to worry. Ill call tomorrow and see what my mum can do
