Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Third eye lid

Theo

Evening all!

Just a quick question...should I be concerned that Theo's third eye lid in his left eye has 'appeared'. When I stroke his face it wanders across his eye...never seen it before and can't see it on his other eye. He seems a little quieter than usual but is still eating, drinking and pooing. Just hoping it's not a sign of a bigger problem? He had his teeth checked in January and the vet said they looked ok. I've recently changed the brand of hay, could that be affecting him?

Thank you for reading!

Hi Theo

I would't be concerned just at the moment, but keep a careful watch what happens. If he's still eating and pooing etc, then hopefully he's in no pain. There's some info here:

Tamsin has given some helpful info here:

And a thread here:

You may want to have the eye checked to make sure he does not have any infection, injury or growth. He may have poked himself in the eye as he was digging in his hay.
I once owned an older bunny who developed a third eyelid which showed all the time. We tried anti-inflammatory drops and antibiotics with no improvement. A specialist determined he had a prolapse in his third eyelid. It did not bother him, even though he looked a bit odd on one side.

Thank you for everyone's replies and sorry I didn't reply sooner! Theo has perked up a bit but his eye is still the same. I'll keep an eye on it and see a vet if there's no improvement.

My Robin's show all the time when receiving fuss or relaxed.

It can be quite normal for larger rabbits
