Has anyone got a rabbit on long-term Loxicom?

& if so do they take Zantac too?

The vet suggested I give Chloe 1ml of Zantac half hour before she has her Loxicom. I just wondered if anybody else has to do this with their rabbit?

Daisy is on long term meloxicam (metacam) which is very similar if not the same? She doesn't have Zantac. If you give it with or after food it should be ok :)

Some Vets feel that it is necessary to prescribe Zantac for a Rabbit on longterm Meloxicam (Loxicom/Metacam) to protect the stomach from ulceration ( Gastric ulceration being a possible side effect of NSAIDs such as Meloxicam). However, some Vets feel that in Rabbits the Zantac is unnecessary as 1- the Rabbit's stomach is a lot more acidic than other species and therefore the gastric lining is more resilient and 2- A Rabbit usually always has some food in their stomach.

My Vet only prescribes Zantac alongside Meloxicam if the Rabbit is not eating much and/or has a reduced gut motility. So really whether or not Zantac is required when a Rabbit is on longterm Meloxicam depends on the specific needs of the individual Rabbit :)

Hi there!

This is a moot point. My regular vet hasn't ever prescribed Zantac alongside Meloxicam. However, I have had problems in rabbits who have been on Meloxicam and I would say follow your vet's instructions.

I would now do this with rabbits on NSAIDs even though common wisdom suggests that the acidity of a rabbit's stomach would mean it wasn't needed. You could try without, but watch for signs of decreased eating - which of course is another problem to address if it occurs

I always make sure they have eaten immediately before taking metacam and have had no issues with it long-term. I've never been given zantac to use at the same time.
 
Doughnut is on zantac permanently, she's been on it over a year, twice a day. I also put metacam in when she's unwell. I know a lot of rabbits from here and have been on metacam long term with no effects but maybe your vet is just being cautious. Zantac is fine to be on long term, as mentioned above it lines the stomach. Doughnut has acid reflux so it soothes that for her so her gullet doesn't get ulcerated like it was before.
