  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Axl - Stasis and ?chest infection

Specialists advice was to review the situation tomorrow before making any other plans as by this point Axl would have had 3 days of antibiotics

I suspect we are reaching the point where we are advised that we've nowhere else to go. I'm not sure continuing would be in Axls best interests after all he's been through in the last week if there is no marked improvement soon. If he had been making progress, albeit slow then I would be happy to continue but we appear to be at the same point we were 5 days ago. I don't want him to suffer....or prolong his life for the sake of it.

I can't deny the cost concerns me too - he is insured but we are almost at the limit of our insurance (£1500). To some degre money is no object to making him better, when we got rabbits we knew what we were getting ourselves into with regards to how much they cost! We are happy, and able, to top up the additional costs, But seeing the costs mount up when you are seeing as little progress is hard....especially when there seems no end in sight

Have you been able to visit Axl ? I am just wondering if you would be able to better assess his demeanour if you were able to do so. I have know hospitalised Rabbits who have actually taken hand fed food from their owner during a visit when previously all other foods had been refused.

I hope that things may have changed for the better overnight, but whatever happens and whatever decision you make you have my support, for what it's worth x

Roxy - we would be very keen to have him home if we could however with two full time jobs, no annual leave etc we can't support the two hourly syringe feeds etc at this time. If this had been different timing wise i.e. Closer to the weekend then I would have taken him home for sat and Sunday when at least one of us was around to support him. Unfortunately the vets didn't feel that was appropriate yesterday/day before as they wanted to try and stabilise him abit first. He is definitely on emeprid and ranitidine, and I think something else, along with antibiotics, IV fluids and pain relief

I can understand that. Luckily my job is very flexible and I can swap and change my hours but my o/h is in exactly the same position as you.
Has there been any improvement this morning? Xxx

You must feel powerless and completely in the hands of the specialist. Which is good, of course, but he's your rabbit ..

When is your review with the specialist?

So it seems that there has been a miraculous turn around - we have poo! And eating! Hurrah! The nurses have described him as 'having attitude' - We can pick him up tomorrow! Didn't get to talk to the vet directly but I have a long list of questions for him tomorrow

The most amazing news :D

I am so glad he can come home :D

I bet your list of questions will stretch out the door - better book a double appointment slot for you!

Hearing this brought tears of joy to my eyes.

I'm so so pleased that he's better! My list for the vet runs at about 15 questions at the moment - oopsy!

I read this thread with my heart in my mouth for you- I am so pleased that there has been an improvement. I hope he continues to thrive in his home environment.

Really strange, but I noticed a car number plate on TV in a drama I was watching, and the first three letters were AXL.

I took it to be a good omen, after I had got over what a coincidence it was :D

Me too

How is he doing Jackie ?
We've literally just walked in the door from the specialists.....it took FOREVER to get there - 2hrs on public transport from work! Madness!

Since we've walked in .he's been running around and chinning everything (I dared to deep clean his room while he was gone haha!) he's dived straight into his hay box and has eaten some yummy forage!

My toddler is so excited he's back I think he could burst!

Vet did say that he's obviously not fully recovered and not completely out of the woods, just carrying on with meds for s few days more and then touching base with the specialist by phone on Friday....so fingers crossed! My hubby is raiding sainsburys for his favourite herbs on the way home!

Fingers crossed he can keep getting better and in the near future we can sort out a new wifey bun for him once he's had his rvhd2 vaccine

I'm sorry you had such a struggle with the transport, but delighted to hear that he's been loving being at home so much.

I'll still be sending vibes for him to get totally well again, but it does sound like he's turned a massive corner now :D

I am so pleased that Axl is home. I had to chuckle about him chinning everything !! How dare you mess with HIS house  Hopefully a few more days of medication will get him back to 100% full health. I hope that your Hubby survived his sortie to Sainsburys.........brave man, very brave man !

I am glad he is as happy to be home as you and your family are to have him back home. When it is time to stop meds, you may want to ask your vet about stopping them one at a time and tapering off on gut motility drugs rather than stopping them abruptly.
