So, I just read that lettuce contains lactucarium...

Star-Dust

New Kit
An article says not to feed rabbits lettuce because it contains lactucarium. Some one said, 'Iceberg lettuce - a popular staple among humans that can often make it into the pet food pile - is dangerous and should never be fed to rabbits.' But this person was talking about Iceberg lettuce. I fed my bunny some romaine lettuce last night and she's acting normal. So... I don't know what to think... :?

Romaine Lettuce is fine, although personally I never feed my Rabbits lettuce :)

Lettuce is fine to feed - in my opinion, it's a myth that it's dangerous.

Frances Harcourt Brown (UK retired rabbit specialist) says lettuce is absolutely fine and has seen her rabbits eat iceberg lettuce without ill effects :D She actually states in this link that lettuce can be beneficial because of it's water content.

So much info on the Internet - takes a lifetime to sift truth from fiction. But there again, I could be wrong

Okay, thanks guys! I was starting to get discouraged because I went to the store yesterday and saw organic romaine lettuce on a great sale and bought a box of it.

A bargain !! I am sure you will go easy on how much you feed to your Bunny in one go :)

Yeah, I decided to start cutting back with the treats. She was getting a little chubby, so now I am being very careful with her food amounts. ;)

“It is said that eating too much lettuce is soporific,” Beatrix Potter wrote.

Apparently the milky sap in lettuce is known to calm the nervous system, and to possess a mildly soporific, sometimes euphoric effect.

If she falls asleep after eating lettuce, you'll know why! Or begins to binky :D

LOL, last night we let her out with our guinea pigs... She started binkying and hopping everywhere then one of the guinea pigs starting tying to hop like her, too.

My guinea pigs love lettuce. The wabbits have grass (free range every few days) and hay and the odd bit of spring greens or dried forage so I save the lettuce for the guinea pigs.
