Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ask for positive vibes for Dash-U/D 04/22/2018

I hope that the meds result in a speedy recovery for Dash. Sending lots of vibes for you also.

Thank you so much for your support.
Dash got meds and is still eating and pooing so that is a good sign even though he still has more than a normal amount of material in his Cecum.
This morning he came running to me before I had to go for a diagnostic medical procedure so at least I did not feel bad leaving him for most of the day.
Thankfully my (or should I say my pet's) vet trusts me to have medications and supplies on hand to quickly treat chronic issues than can become emergencies if not addressed right away.

Dash loves his dandelion greens which I get from the supermarket. I noticed some of these greens have more fiber in their stems and I wonder if these strands of plant fiber may be building up in Dash's system when he eats them in record time. The reason I say this is because the first huge poos he passed to end his last impaction/stasis episode contained a lot of what seemed like plant/hay fiber. Dash usually has large, oval poos due to his permanent condition; so I may just be over analyzing everything in an attempt to find out why he can go from being happy and energetic to ill within a few hours.

I am glad to hear that Dash is relatively stable at the moment. I would have thought that any plant fibre would be of benefit to the motility of the cecum rather than cause problems. It may be that his latest 'episode' just happened to coincide with him having ingested a lot of dandelion greens as opposed to the DGs actually causing the episode. I really hope that Dash will remain as well as possible.

I am now going over the GC to check for an update about your diagnostics xx

I would've thought plant fibre was a good thing, but I see the point you're making and it might be worth talking with your vet about it.

Sending vibes for Dash and good wishes that your own tests go smoothly turn out well.

I’m glad he is doing well :thumb: I think it is natural to analyse everything, and sometimes you can work out the cause. Topping up the vibes for him, and you too xx

After several days of Dash acting normally, this morning I noticed he was not as happy to see me and he only had a few poos in his litterbox since it was cleaned last night. I cleaned his litterbox so I could determine if he was making any poos, gave him Cisapride, Medicam and more greens. He was nibbling the greens and fresh hay so I went to a pool exercise class at the Y and to the supermarket for more greens. When I returned he passed poos that were very irregular, including a poo that was over two inches long. He also had some mucus in his poo, the poo had a green tint, and it was wet and contained larger bits of fiber. He was jumping around and begging for more greens so I was relieved. I decided to take the largest poo and a couple other samples to the vets prior to their closing to see if the vet may want to test it.
Dash was also peeing outside his litterbox again which he does when he has stasis. Since his awful case of stasis a few weeks ago he usually has a wet rear too. I wonder if it was from his straining to poo. He had this issue for many weeks after his serious stasis incident a year ago too.

I thought so too. He was doing well on the hay and greens for many months so I wonder it I am overthinking everything.
He had another incident today and recovered quickly. Please see my other post for details.

Thanks for the good thoughts. Dash gave me another scare today. Thankfully he passed a lot of unusual poos a few hours after he got meds. This evening he was back to his active self, begging and eating everything in record time.

Yes it can be. Chronic constipation can cause spurious diarrhoea, AKA 'overflow diarrhoea'

http://pallipedia.org/overflow-diarrhea-spurious-diarrhea/

He may well involuntarily empty his bladder as he strains to poo too.

The very large fecal poos will almost certainly cause inflammation within the bowel. It sounds as though you have managed to head off another serious bout of stasis. I hope that Dash feels more comfortable now x

Thank you for the information Jane. Dash got more meds this evening to keep him comfortable overnight and to keep his system moving.
I do believe his bowel is inflamed since his serious episode a few weeks ago. That incident ended with his passing a poo that was not only as long as the one today, but also at least twice the diameter.
The medicam should help the inflammation. Do you have any suggestions for the inflammation?

Just want to add my positive thoughts for Dash. Poor chap seems to be going through it at the moment.
Adding vibes here for you as well, bunnymomma. I'm sorry things have been so rough for you this year. xxxx

Dash is very lucky that you were so quick to notice and step in with the meds :thumb: I’m glad he seems to have recovered quickly this time :thumb:

In humans with inflammatory bowel conditions corticosteroids are often prescribed, but in Rabbits the use of corticosteroids is both controversial and complex. Rabbits are very sensitive to the adverse side effects.

An Exotics specialist I know has advised that in some cases similar to those of Dash it can be necessary to keep them on prokinetics long-term. The idea being to try to regulate the peristaltic action of the GI tract rather than only treating when there is a problem. But that is of course something that only the Vet treating the Rabbit can decide. There wont be a one size fits all.

One thing I am wondering is if Meloxicam may be somewhat contra-indicated in cases of bowel disease . I am thinking about NSAID induced enteropathy

I have no idea if this could potentially be an issue :?

Sorry to hear about Dash and sending vibes for him. You must be getting very exhausted.

Regards the inflammation, in one case my vet advised an 'alternative' as there were no meds that helped, and in fact they only made it worse.

Last week I took the first poos to the vets for analysis, including the very long one. I spoke to the vet and was told there were no parasites or other issues, yet his poo appeared like it was dry inside. At the time Dash was drinking a normal amount plus eating his wet greens, so it was a mystery. Vet suggested he my have Dysautotomia which would require a dangerous biopsy to confirm. Vet advised to keep him on Cisapride for several days after he seemed normal before trying him off meds. I cut him back to once a day Cisapride on Saturday and Sunday and this morning he was back to not pooing. Last night he was eating his hay and greens, dashing around, and begging for more greens (which he received). This norming I only saw one new poo in his litterbox and he was sitting quietly and not wanting his greens. I gave him more meds and even gave him some sub Q fluids to keep his gut contents hydrated. Now I am back to waiting for poo, and also hoping he will begin eating. He picked up one small piece of dandelion and then stopped eating so I know he wants to eat, but this episode is worse than the one last week where he quickly returned to eating the greens. Please send us some positive vibes again.

I've just replied to your message and I'm sending additional vibes for Dash here xx
