  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

3/5 heart murmur in 1yr 7 mth rabbit *update 11/02/18*

Yes. I'll be happier leaving her in boarding now.
It's a shame she's now developed a heart murmur but at least it's only a grade 1 which is actually very common in most species.

I expect if you hadn't got an attentive vet, a grade 1 heart murmur wouldn't be detected for the most part and because as you say, it's very common.

So Daphne is now 2yrs 8mths old and still has a heart murmur.

It varies in intensity and does occasionally disappear however with consult at the vets we believe she may be starting the early stages of heart failure.

We've not started on meds yet as symptoms are minimal and she doesn't cope well with meds & handling so the stress of medication could cause more harm than good.

Obviously it's a difficult thing for us to deal with as she is so young. We're all holding out hope that she will have many years before ever needing any medical intervention as she is a stubborn bunny.

I will of course update this thread as she progresses but she'll be having heart checks every 6 months at normal vaccination appointments.
