Iris - chest infection and more UD she's gone

Sending lots of vibes for Iris! Ms B's also on sulfatrim for a respiratory infection, under a week in and no sign of improvement so far. Will keep an eye on your thread. Hoping that Irises snoring is a good sign. x

I hope the sulfatrim kicks in and Ms B is feeling much better soon. Vibes for her and emotional strength for you. I understand the stress - please keep me updated. Thank you for caring about my daft deaf girl.

Thank you both. I'm relieved that the poor girl is finally under treatment. It took too long - I just hope it has no long-lasting repercussions.

Iris is VERY good in herself. Currently jumping and diving over my bed in hopes of another treat. I'm so glad to see she's so much livelier. Zara, less so as Iris is interrupting her "mum+me" time - though the cat shouldn't complain; she spends all night with me.

However, she is still sneezing a lot. Sometimes it's mild compared to what it has been, but she also has very bad attacks a few times a day. (Just had one as I write. :( ) Her nose is still damp to the touch too.

She's also still leaving a couple of uneaten cecatrophs. No way near as many as it was at her worst. But it does still happen. I've only been giving her (and Arce) SS pellets, hay, and the occasional treat. Might change the treats over to Fibafirst, see if that helps.

Iris returns to the vets tomorrow - we're seeing the same one that put her on treatment thank goodness. She and Arce will be much less impressed.

As for me? Very tired, in pain, but mostly it's the same old. I see one of my specialists a week tomorrow. I'll just keep on truckin'. Thank you, MM. :)

oh- and yeah, I can sleep through her snores. She's still snoring every so often. It's the jumping on the bed that wakes me!

You're a stoic tlc. I often think of you because you are going through a lot with yourself and your rabbits and I can so empathise with that. You do cope well, but then, is there any other way to handle it all? xx

Thank you for yours and I'm glad Iris is more lively today, it's always worrying wondering if meds are working, and your poor girl has dental and other issues ongoing, so stay strong. It's great she has companions, Mr B who we lost in November was deaf, Ms B was "his ears."

Like Iris, Ms B's left some uneaten cecals. Started just before she was put on the sulfatrim and it's not her diet - cut her veg and pellets right down. Since the meds her wee is also noticeably a more vivid orange/brown.

I didn't want her to go on sulfatrim tbqh, I wanted to use depocillin straight away as she's been like this since as long as I've had her - but the p@h vets just wouldn't listen until 2 weeks ago. We're seeing a RWAF gold star vet and sulfatrim was also her 1st recommendation. Our vet wants to see signs of nasal and eye discharge clearing up, if not then we're to go back before her 4 week treatment ends. I've seen some opinions that sulfatrim's not as effective as some newer antibx, (mainly US sites,) but from what I understand it's not as harsh either, on a buns digestive system.

Of course Ms B absolutely hates it. She's mastered pushing her little paws forward, while she tucks her head and mouth behind them and ducks inside the burrito!

Hugs and vibes for you and Iris. x

There's good and bad news from Iris's appointment.

The bad news is she hasn't responded to the sulfatrim at all (I knew that) and she was at the high end of the dosage scale.

The good news is I now have a 32ml bottle of metacam for her. I have also just heard that P@H have authorised their paying for a bottle of depocillin, a sharps box, needles and a followup appointment with Amy. However that is all they'll authorise. I'm not entirely sure if they'll pay for her dental or not. She has also maintained weight in spite of not eating all her caecotrophs and losing her appetite for pellets. :)

I've been told by the member of staff that if she doesn't respond to depocillin/needs more, I can "surrender her back to them so don't have to worry about costs of Iris's treatment and she shouldn't have been sold whilst sneezing in the first place." But we WON'T be surrendering her back. I'm not that callous and I adopted her (and Arce) for a home for life. They should have caught the sneezing, and the first vet she saw misdiagnosed. It's not our fault and it's DEFINITELY not Iris's.

So that's that for now. The depocillin is on order and we pick it up tomorrow.

Bad news on the Sulphatrim, but you suspected this anyway I think. It's good that you've got some help with the costs of her continuing treatment. The Depocillin is fairly inexpensive anyway I think.

At least you can now have more confidence that the medication will work for her. It's also encouraging that she's maintained her weight.

It's good news about the Depocillin, for sure :) And you got the Metacam, which isn't cheap :)

I'm glad she's maintained weight. Another positive.

I really hope the pen works for her :)

That's great about her weight. I'm pleased that they have come through and are providing what you and Iris need going forward x

Argh, I'm angry with myself.

Accidentally left a pair of sealed small size white toblerones out in my room and both girls got at them. A tiny nibble off of one, and four triangles (but not the bases) off the other. That's such a rookie mistake. How could I let it happen? :( :( :(

Also went to pick up the depocillin and it wasn't there yet. Health-wise I can't manage another trip there in the next couple of days. It's too far and terrible for me to travel.

I feel like such a bad bunny mum. Maybe Iris would be better off without me. :(

Despite my stupid :censored: idiocy, both girls seem none the worse for it this morning. Just the usual going on with Iris - sneezing and caecotrophs on the floor. They were full of it yesterday night and this morning. Made Zara (cat) run for it last night. Still watching them like a hawk though.

I'm glad to hear the girls are none the worse for their foray into the world of sweeties. :)
I have to laugh at them messing with the cat. This is why I always wanted a giant of some kind...could just see my cats going into the bunny room to poke the "strange looking mice" and then high tailing it out of there when King Kong Rabbit shows up!

We've all been there with the mishaps. Don't let it cloud your opinion of yourself. You are a wonderful bunny mum. They are okay.

Hoping that the medication you need arrives and that once administered, Iris is feeling better soon. ((((((((Huge hugs)))))) xxxx

I'm glad the rabbits are both OK after their naughty sneaking of chocolate. I'm sure that house rabbits must have many instances of such things happening and it certainly in your case doesn't mean that you are a "bad bunny mum".

I've had to wait longer than 24 hours before for Depocillin. I hope it arrives soon and starts to work for Iris.

We and the buns love and need you tlc :D
We've all made silly mistakes and the rabbits are none the worse off for it :)

When will the Depo come in and how will you get it?

I feel bad but at least they are none the worse for wear.

I'll be picking it up Saturday. I know I shouldn't leave it til then but I really shouldn't travel right now. It'll be a bottle, needles, and a sharps box, I believe. And they are charging P@H in excess of £130 for it.

I'm sorry you got stressed :(
As said, we all make mistakes.

I hope you'll be able to make the journey xx
£130 seems a lot, but around £20 will be the sharps bin, and around £30 for the needles etc. The most of it is probably the actual medicine.

I don't think I paid much more then £10 for my bottle of Depocillin.

Maybe I'm thinking of a different drug.... or my old practice got ripped off when buying bottles lol

I asked my regular vet and she said she wouldn't charge more than £25ish. The vet at P@H said the price was per bottle, excluding the necessary equipment to use it. Madness. At least they agreed to pay!

But thank you all. I am feeling a little better, but will even moreso when I get the overpriced bottle of Depo.

Argh... Iris is feeling a bit flat, very grumbly. Tried to get her meds and it's on flipping back order now. Who knows when it'll arrive?

My poor girl. :(

I've paid up to £60 for a full bottle of Depocillin. But considering I can then use it every day, or every other day, for as long as needed, then I don't mind paying that :)
