  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sorry I don't have any experience of kidney/bladder issues but didn't want to read and run.
Hope your little man is ok.
Sending vibes and nose rubs  xx

Charlie had to be rushed back to the vet today. He refused breakfast and has been quiet. He nibbled a bit once I'd given him ranatidin or whatever it's called. I also gave him some fibreplex. I felt his tummy and he seemed in pain so took him to be checked. His tummy is full but he is in pain. She thinks it's due to his suspeced kidney problems despite normal tests at this stage. He was given an injection of pain relief . One that won't damage kidneys further. I've been given critical care to feed him. He's quite depressed and refused food when we got home. Really worried. Whatever is wrong seems to be progressing . I hope he makes it overnight

Lucy I am so sorry

Loads of vibes for your little man xx

I am really sorry that Charlie has become so poorly  The pain relief he had may have been buprenorphine (Vetergesic/Buprecare). This is an opiate and it can cause marked sedation. So that might account for him appearing to be very flat. How has he coped overnight ?

I've just come to this thread. I'm glad they've ruled out that the mystery object was a stone, although I have seen pictures of objects that are uroliths that look jagged like that. My mini rex had a smooth, egg shaped stone the size of the end of my thumb settle in his bladder and urethra a year or so ago and had to have emergency surgery, but not until he had had to wait for 8 hours overnight for the vet's to open. (Because they can never fall ill during office hours or on a weekday. :( ) In removing it the vet did some accidental damage and he is a tad incontinent to this day, but he miraculously recovered. :)

It sounds like you are saying there is no sign of kidney issues in the bloodwork, yet they are treating him as if he had kidney issues? Did they say why, if a urolith has been ruled out?

Whatever is ailing your dear Charlie, I hope it can be sussed out and treated successfully and quickly and that he makes a full recovery.

Thanks everyone. He is alot perkier today. He had his breakfast and has been eating hay now. Not as lethargic thank goodness!

Jane, I think that is what it was. He had a bit of carrot before I went to bed last night.

I'm just keeping a close eye.
They believe it's kidney problems because all his clinical signs lead to that. My vet has spoken to specialists in other countries who are researching this kind of thing and they said that sometimes it can be there without it showing. We've ruled out everything we can thing of. It could be he has a defect in the kidneys since the problem has gone on for years. He has been a bit of a puzzle

We even looked for tumors but found nothing obvious
