Sylar's stasis thread

He is certainly looking very chilled. My Tan has also started to gently nip sometimes when I pick her up every evening to give her her Metacam. I'm sure they just get very fed up with it and of course don't understand the reason why it's being done:)

I hope you have a period of calm with him (and Hiro) now. How's your knee btw?

I don't blame him. He's been pestered for a good 4 months now :( Poor boy. I hope so too but I still don't think that it's teeth related so we will see I guess!

My knee is a lot better but is a little bit sore today because I was up and down a lot yesterday with Sy. Hoping to go back to work soon. I haven't been able to go back yet because being a bar maid my job involves lots of bending and standing around on my feet for 6-8 hours at a time. I can't wait to get back! Thanks for asking :)

I also have a litter tray in my room but since getting tilty Hiro picks and chooses when he uses it! He knows that he has to pee in it but he can't make up his mind about the poops. They belong just outside of the litter box. Apparently!
Carpets are sore point to me. My rabbits are messy at the best of times but with them being ill recently we've been leaving food all over the tempt them. I swept and hoovered yesterday before Sy came home... Hiro wanted to model what our carpet looks like today. An absolute state!

gorgeous. mine all do their cutest flops in a pile of hay (& poo). I reckon they do it on purpose so I take fewer photos

Oh I'm so glad to come in here and see that Sy is doing better. What a handsome lad he is!
There is no happier day for me than when I could see my bunnies all sprawled like this, enjoying the comforts. :) Having two with arthritis it's always a surprise to see them stretched out and it doesn't happen often.

I hope he'll continue to go from strength to strength. xxxx

ETA: Just saw the picture of Hiro  yup...I can remember having bunnies in my bedroom (they are in an anteroom now :( ) and hay being everywhere...but what got me was how Pip would fling poos from time to time. I would occasionally find one on the bed near my pillow. :? I think she was sending me a message.

My o/h works nights and pretty much every night he comes home to find one singular poop on his pillow  I think that's Sylar telling him who the man of the house really is...!!!
Thank you for your kind words :)

Sy lay at the bottom of the bed when I slept last night. I kept waking up to see if he was still there and when he was I'd give him a quick snuggle and then go back to sleep. I felt him get down at around 4am when my o/h got home from work. He used to lie on the bed a lot before Hiro got poorly but he doesn't really do it anymore and definitely not for that long. I always wonder if he realises that Hiro can't jump up anymore so he stays down... either way, it was lovely to have him with me and I really enjoyed the cuddles.
He's been full of beans so far today. We were playing tunnels with them earlier. They have so many toys but they love nothing more than when we kneel on the floor and make tunnels with our legs
I've seen him eating some pellets, hay, plantain, parsley, dill and coriander.
So far so good :)

This all sounds good :D

I know about rabbits taking over the house  My latest has to strew hay everywhere and eat it off the floor

Sy went off his food again today. He was doing so well :(

His tummy was silent so I gave him some gas drops, a bit of metacam and some tummy rubs. After a little while his tummy started making some very very loud, weird noises. Almost like letting a balloon down?!
He seems ok now but we have decided to try going Pellet free for a week, maybe two.
We don't think his issues can be related to his greens because for a really long time he refused to eat them and he still had problems. We've cut out all other treats except for foragey stuff so for now, that leaves Pellets.
My o/h used to give them quite a big amount around 3pm and they would ignore them and then graze later in the day, his stasis issues would always come on around 11pm at night, sometimes a little later.
Now they get 10g of pellets between them at around 1pm. They gobble them all up like treats and coincidentally he now gets his stasis issues earlier at around 5pm.
I'm probably clutching at straws again but we are running out of options :(

Well it's certainly worth a try.

I think to give it a good trial I would not re-introduce pellets unless he has another episode.

Oh dear - so sorry to hear this :(

I guess you'll have to try it. Is he eating loads of hay and forage?

He's been eating SO much hay and he's actually enthusiastic about his greens again for the first time in months. He seems to enjoy the dried foragey stuff as well.
If it's not pellets then I don't really have anything left to try :(

Yes that's what we plan to do :) If it doesn't happen whilst Pellet free then we won't reintroduce them.

My o/h woke up and he was eating hay in his tunnel, he gave them some pellets and 40 minutes later he was incredibly uncomfortable looking and refused all food. If it is the Pellets it was a very quick reaction to them. His belly makes the weirdest, high pitched noises though and it must be very uncomfortable for him.

Sorry to hear Sy isn't eating again, it's been very stressful for us and your episodes have been a lot more frequent so I can only imagine how you feel. Fingers crossed this works. I did read on a thread on here recently (might have been Thumps) that rabbits who don't eat pellets need at least an hour a day outside for the vitamin D.

Yes, they do need to get their Vitamin D, which is usually contained in pellets.

Do you think your vet would have an opinion about this Roxy?

I suddenly had an additional thought about the Vitamin D, and began to search for any info on forage containing this vitamin.

I have just come across this:

http://www.uobabylon.edu.iq/uobcoleges/fileshare/articles/Vitamins in Forages.pdf

It says that bit D is likely to be present in forages, but there's been no studies of the quantities, and also of course what forage in particular.
But there is a chart which refers to green forage and dehydrated forage - grasses and hay etc .....

I guess it would be a good subject for *someone* to study, but probably no-one will .....

Well... to be honest I asked Molly if she thought his issues were diet related but she said that she thought that it was unlikely.
My new vets have said that it's something to consider if the dental doesn't work (which it hasn't!).
I'll have to do some research on Vitamin D and go from there.

I agree, after a year of severe GI tract issues and endless diagnostics for one of my Rabbits it was cutting out all pelleted/muesli feed that bought about a HUGE improvement. He is like a different Rabbit.

I have also had a Rabbit who could not cope with a pellet feed BUT he could cope with a Muesli Mix. Before anyone decides to jump on me for 'recommending' feeding **** to a Rabbit, that is NOT what I am saying. But sometimes the rule book needs to be broken to address the specific needs of an individual Rabbit. On the advice of a Specialist Vet I fed the effected Rabbit a small portion of muesli mix a day along with his usual ton of hay. Cpayne on here was given the same advice about feeding Doughnut Bunny a Muesli Mix due to her severe GI tract problem. It was advice given by the same Specialist who helped me.

IME (all unqualified of course..........) we have to go with what works for the individual Rabbit, even if it happens to go against the general best practice rules.

Sorry to be a bit Evangelical about this !!

Lots of vibes for Sy and his pal Hiro

I'm happy to try anything if it works! Obviously not all rabbits are the same because if they were then I'd have 3 sick bunnies instead of just the one. They all get fed exactly the same food!

It's day 2 of pellet free for my poor Sy and he is guilt tripping me. Every time I walk into the room he comes running over with a pitiful look on his face.
He made me feel extra bad last night after I'd sneaked Hiro some Pellets. He jumped up on my bed and started sniffing my hand :(
Can I be quite liberal with the GG stuff if he is pellet free? I just want to make sure that his diet is ok and that he won't starve!

They get -
Unlimited Timothy Hay and Meadow Hay.
A pile of Oxbow Orchard Grass.
Greens - Coriander, Parsley, Mint and Dill
Dried forage mix made up of the following
- Dandelion
- Plantain
- Nettle
- Blackberry Leaf
- Pear Leaf
- Willow Leaves
- Strawberry Leaf
- Mulberry Leaf
- Raspberry Leaf
- Sunflower Petals
- Apple Leaf
- Marigold Petals
- Echinacea Herb & Flowers
- Lemon Balm
- Coltsfood Leaves
- Hazel
- Apple Sticks
- Pear Sticks

I agree, all rabbits are different and you can't assume that what works for one will work for another.

I found with one of mine, a sensitive stomach issue meant a change of pellet and also the inclusion of lots more fibrous forage foods such as brambles.

It's recommended to feed at least 3 different 'green veggies' per day if you cut out pellets, to ensure a variety of nutrients. I also add in meadow hays and such like to also enhance the nutrition profile.

Good luck!!

Do you think that I need to add anything else to the above MM?
I've considered adding Kale back in but worried about gas. Are the herbs enough? Xx
