Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Post spay help

Hi my three year old doe was spayed earlier today, I had other females spayed but she really doesn't seem to be coping too well. She had pain killers and isn't due more till the morning. She had gut stimulant before op and again when I got home. She's very sleepy still and won't hop around. She's just laying down. Had to syringe recovery food into her every hour and still not eaten although has pooped. She also has just started to whimper? This isn't normal is it? Do u think a call to vets is needed?

I'm sorry to hear about your rabbit Aimee. However, this sounds normal after a spay. The vet probably gave her an opiate pain reliever, and combined with the anaesthetic could well leave her knocked out until tomorrow. Do you have a post spay check up booked, and has your vet given you pain relief for her in the meantime? (Metacam)

You're doing the right thing syringe feeding her and of course if you're concerned you should ring your vet. I have found does can take 3/4 days before normal eating/pooing and behaviour is resumed.

Does the spay wound look clean and OK? x

Hi,

Thanks for ur response, I rushed her to the out of hours vets but she passed away on their table. I'm feeling absolutely awful as they said it was probably due to the anaesthetic but I feel so guilty as she was fit and well before the op. She was such a softie, gutted. I know getting her spayed was the right thing but I do feel awful.

Thanks again for ur reply x

Aimee this is awful and I am so very sorry :(

I wish there was something I could do to take away the pain and bring her back again to you. It seems so unfair!

Loads of hugs xxx

I'm so very sorry Aimee. It's very rare, but it does happen. I lost a little Polish boy, Blue, some years ago. He never even had the op, just the anaesthetic.

Bless you - you mustn't beat yourself up over this as you did the right thing. I'm sure you're going through all sorts of agonies right now though and my heart goes out to you xx.

I'm so sorry. It's a heartbreaking thing to happen. Please don't beat yourself up - you were doing the right thing for her long term health and this is beyond terrible for you.

So sorry to read this. As others have said, you were absolutely doing the right thing for her. Huge hugs xxx

I'm I sorry but you really did do the right thing getting a girl bunny spayed. I have such a fear of this happening; it is rare but must make it worse in a way. Binky free beautiful.

I'm very sorry you lost her, how awful. :( I am shocked the vets sent her home in that state tbh. I think I'd be questioning the vets that you use.

Binky free Aimee.

Awww no!! My girl behaved similarly, she just wanted to be left alone and she didn't eat for over 24 hours but was fine... im so sorry this was not the same for you..... x
