  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Middle/inner ear infection please help :(

Ok thank you for that Jack's-Jane I will mention my concerns about this to Molly and see what she thinks. I am very grateful for all of this advice from everybody, it's so hard to know what to try and what not to try as Alfie is my first rabbit. I am trying to educate myself as best I can from the internet, the facebook group, and all of you lovely people on here xx

Thank you MightyMax - the Lapizole has been prescribed for 1 week and if I see improvement to go back and ask for a 28 day prescription. Although I'm not sure how I know that any improvement I see is down to this medication as opposed to any of the others? I hope it can't harm him if he takes it for 28 days unnecessarily. Thanks for that suggestion. I managed to get him to eat 4 teaspoonfuls of his nuggets made into a paste with cool boiled water and Ellas kitchen baby food last night. This morning hasn't been as successful, he's only had 1 teaspoon but I keep trying to encourage him to have some more. Xx

I don't know if this will be of any help, but might be worth a try if your bun is struggling, or not wanting to eat. My bridge bun, Toffee, had ongoing dental/jaw problems, which made eating difficult for him most of the time. I used to mix a little Oxbow critical care, made into a thick paste, with a few crushed nuggets, and either a bit of grated carrot or apple. He used to love it, and at least he was getting some good fibre that way, as he struggled to eat hay. Not every bun likes critical care, but he loved it as it was aniseed flavoured. Good luck anyway with Alfie's ongoing treatment xxxx

Hi Beth

You're very welcome!

For EC treatment, a 9 days course won't hit the spot. That's for pin worms only.

28 days is what's needed, the Panacur has been tested and well used by lots of rabbits. Of course everything has a side effect, but 28 days of a normal Panacur dose should be quite OK.

You cannot be expected to see any improvement specifically down to the Panacur - it will be impossible to tell what's working.

Re Ella's Kitchen - I used to vary the flavours as some buns can be really fussy

*There is also a school of thought that says when treating for EC you should bleach litter trays and clean - possibly steam - the environment as much as possible on days 21 and 28 of treatment, to interrupt the life cycle of the parasite.*

Thank you for everybody's replies. Alfie is pretty much the same. Head tilt, next to no balance, rolling, barely eating or drinking. I took him to a specialist who put him on doxycycline and stemetil alongside his metacam. I am also feeding him all sorts of combinations of food which he sometimes eats off a spoon but I'm also syringing him burgess dualcare (he wouldn't touch critical care and wouldn't swallow it when I syringed it either). She said if the meds don't show improvement that she'd recommend a CT scan to find a possible abscess. X

I know there are big financial implications with Alfie's treatment at the moment Beth, but I was wondering how both he and you are doing at the moment? :)
