  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

how safe after castration?

My Toby was neutered 34 days ago. Today I have brought home a girlfriend who is not yet spade. Is there a possibility he could still get her pregnant??? Help!

Should be ok after a month :) The usual recommendation is to allow 6 weeks after neutering to be on the safe side, but there is plenty of data out there which shows that provided the op was done correctly, there's virtually nothing remaining after 4 weeks. Ideally, I would get your little girl spayed before introducing them, but if he's been neutered for more than a month now, I wouldn't be fretting too much about the risk of pregnancy.

RWAF recommends a month, but most vets (I know) say 3/4 weeks. I doubt he would get her pregnant :)

If she's spayed, then he won't get so excited over her and possibly annoy her by humping!

What's her name? :)

After a mishap with two of my Rabbits many years ago where-by a Buck remained fertile for over 6 weeks after castration and managed to impregnate 3 Does :)shock:) I now always err on the side of caution and wait for 6 weeks. It may have been that my Buck's castration was not done correctly, I was with an awful Vet back then and I knew very little about Rabbits. It was certainly a sharp learning curve for me !!

Well jc did it so I definitely trust it's done properly however It would be just my luck! Toby is never humped anything or anyone before however about four hours into their second bunny date he will not stop humping her! I will post some pictures in the bonding section and do an update!

I doubt she would get pregnant at 12 weeks, she would never be able to care for babies. The humping is most likely a dominance thing. Are you sure Millie is a female?

Well five weeks on, you're fine :D And JC too - what could be better!

If I took a pic would you be able to tell if she female?

It's possible to tell from a photo, sometimes.

It's easier when you're actually with the rabbit and can 'pop' out the relevant bit (sorry - couldn't help being graphic) :)

Always leave it 6 weeks and keep them in hutches where they can see each other but cannot get to each other so they can bond during this period of time.
