Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Human tummy bugs and rabbits

Young Bun
Hi all,

Now no laughing at my question please as it may seem a little silly.

Ok so my daughter is having a horrendous case of gastroenteritis at the moment, she was hospitalised over night last night but is back home this afternoon.

She is particularly in love with Bubbles and everyday they spend hours together but given his statis and her being constantly sick i have told her to stay away from him.

Am i being way over the top in trying to prevent him getting poorly? Me seperating them is upsetting them both as its a tight bond they have but i just feel uncertain.

Thanks
Dem x

I'm no expert but I don't think there are any human illnesses that can be passed to bunnies and vice versa. I would lift the 'no contact' ban, but that's just me. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can help.

Although it is exceptionally rare Salmonella could be passed from humans to a Rabbit. I would think that good hand hygeine would be sufficient to mean it'd be safe for your daughter to have contact with her Bunny friend.

Another virus that can be transmitted from humans to Rabbits is the Herpes Simplex virus (cold sore virus). So if you have a cold sore dont kiss your Bunny.

I hope your daughter feels much better soon Dem xx

thanks everyone, no cold sores so thats good and she is hand washing well so i shall reunite the soulmates.

Thanks so much. And fingers crossed shes back to normal sooner rather than later too.

x
