  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rudy, U/D ...the end...

Even if he were to have had the Filavac booster he may not have a good immune response to it. We dont know for certain that the duration of immunity is only 6 months so he probably still has some immunity from the first vaccine. I hope that you will hear from the Vets re the Xray tomorrow. Sending more nose rubs for Rudy

:(:( Sigh.

Oh dear. Waiting and worrying is not what you need

Not going to find out today either, the vet's not working today as she did OOH at the weekend. So Monday's the earliest I will hear. I don't even know if she's managed to get the radiographs or if that is the delay in her feeding back to me.

Realistically, Rudy's lung/breathing symptoms don't seem any worse but it would be nice to hear that the x-rays look the same or something reassuring.

Well he certainly looked very comfy and Rabbits struggling with lung problems dont often lay down as he was. He seems to be continuing to cope remarkably well, but of course you are the one who has to do all the worrying

 That's good enough for me. I don't have any experience of this. Seeing him run for treats and falling to one side as he does is very hard for me but it doesn't seem to bother him unduly, I think he's just worried if he isn't quick enough he'll miss a treat! I rarely hear his breathing. It would be really nice to get the feedback I'm expecting though, just so I know.

I'm sorry you are still waiting (and worrying) but Rudy doesn't know any of this and it sounds like he is feeling comfortable

The 'lesion' in Rudy's chest doesn't seem to have changed much since his x-ray in October :D

A vet who I've know for 8+ years has looked at the leg x-rays and is less convinced that it is cancer ...

Thanks again everyone. I finally got feedback yesterday from the vet who did the x-rays. The delay was because she's been communicating with a rabbit specialist re the images, treatment, prognosis etc. The rabbit specialist also said, "I wouldn't like to diagnose cancer on these images". There is obviously disease process of some sort but it could be a few different options. Without sedation for better x-rays or biopsy we won't know but the consensus is none of those things would alter the treatment options so we are just continuing to keep him on painkillers and monitor.

The rabbit savvy vet was talking about vaccinating him in a months time if he continues to remain stable. It makes sense but will still be nerve wracking.

I understand that as I was in a similar situation with one of mine. He was vaccinated and thankfully he has remained well. I hope that Rudy continues to remain stable x

So glad to hear the news has gotten brighter for you and Rudy.
I really hope he will remain well and have many enjoyable days ahead with you. :) xxxx

Rudy had a review with the vet yesterday. He's now using both hind legs! She feels the Metacam is making him a lot more comfortable. He's without doubt happy in himself at the moment and I don't hear him coughing/retching very often. I rarely hear noisy breathing. He hasn't lost any more weight.

This vet isn't keen to vaccinate and explained her reasons: given we don't know what is going on in his chest we don't know how the extra effort required of his body when he is vaccinated will affect him. Very sound reasoning, I think. She also felt we don't have to worry unduly about myxomatosis vaccination given that he has a good history spanning 9 years + of appropriate vaccination. He's not due that one til June, it's just the VHD2 he's overdue.

Sounds like a good update to me and your RS Vet is the one best placed to advise you re the vaccinating :)

So, I just typed a long explanation then googled the spelling of caecotroph and lost my text:(:( I haven't got the energy to type it all again but I'm worried about him.

He fell awkwardly yesterday after having a week of not being good anyway. His mobility is really poor today but his appetite is excellent! He's clean underneath and is taking himself to the litter tray, although his balance and co-ordination is terrible, I'm amazed that that's still important to him.

I'm torn on which vet to take him to - possibly both? I'm really struggling for the best outcome for him.

I could take him to the "rabbit vets", which involves 1.5 hour round trip, the vet seeing him would be an orthopaedic surgeon, they could x-ray there and then if needed. I'm pretty sure Tramadol is what will be offered, I don't get the impression there is anywhere else to go.

If I take him to the local vets there will be less expertise but a 5 minute journey and they have acupuncture/laser therapy/physiotherapy ... I'm not actually sure if any of those are available for rabbits (website just talks about cats and dogs) but may be more use than pharmacotherapy (in addition to, being an option).

Really, really don't know what to do but I can't leave him as he is long term. I'm sitting it out today as he fell badly so may improve a fair bit in the next 24 hours.... My chosen vet locally isn't available tomorrow. He had been doing so well, as well :cry: He's about a week short of his official tenth birthday.
