  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

10 year old french lop Teddy

As always, go with Jane's advice.

The nystagmus, circling and possibly cataracts could be EC related. Also the timing after a vaccination may just have been enough stress on his system to have brought out the symptoms from EC lurking there.

Mites may be due to age / arthritis and an inability to groom properly.

As he is eating well and otherwise OK (routine blood scan?), I would also be asking your vet about changing the antibiotics and giving a standard course of EC treatment a go. Panacur is easy, cheap and low risk even if there is no EC. Anti-inflammatories may help with many possibilities (EC neurological symptoms, arthritis, pain from ear infection, etc). It covers several bases even if there is no firm diagnosis.

Hope all goes well today.

I am waiting for Gill to phone me, we don't have an appointment yet, I'm not taking him back to the original vet as I think he'll just want to pts x

Oh good luck with the big man, he is a wee (or big) favourite of mine, you always manage to take such fab photos of him and I totally remember when you got him :)

Update

I've spoken to Gill the vet and she said it will either be a inner ear abscess which she would have to treat surgical (not an option given his age) or EC but he will need at least 2 months panacur. She feels his outlook is bleak but as long as he carries on eating I am going to start the panacur, if he stops or gets worse then I will have no option but to pts. I'm not feeling very positive but I really want to give him a chance.

I'm sorry it's not better news. But I'm sending lots of vibes, I hope he can remain comfortable as long as possible xx

Yes I felt that a course of Panacur would be the least invasive option.

I hope he responds well.

Hello! So pleased I popped on as I do not come on that often now either - but was SO PLEASED to see Teddy is still with you - albeit poorly.

I would definitely try Panacur as well as any antibiotics - and of course a rabbity specialist.

PS we have a french lop who had this for a while and after panacur is much much better - he had another issue which made him run down and the EC which he has always carried flared up - and by improving his overall health we were then able to get back on top of things!!

You are doing all you can for him and I hope he will remain feeling as well within himself as possible. Did Gill mention changing the abx from Baytril to an injectable Penicillin ?

I have also had good results with injectable Penicillin for stubborn infections. Sending lots of vibes for Teddy.

Did he get the head tilt with it? Teddy doesn't have that. I'm off to get panacur today.

The vet Jane recommended along with others said they wouldn't work, only surgery. Thank you x
