Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Recovery post dental

Wow! So interesting to hear your story. My conclusion with Daisy was that she is just SO sensitive and this is why her recoveries have been so long. She is such a sensitive soul and the rabbit rescue place had her a long time and were very particular about where she was homed. So we are very lucky to have her.

I just can't see how anyone would be able to hold her still enough to give her a conscious dental.

Have you found that Raisin finds it all very distressing though? I'm worried the whole process would scare Daisy so much that she'd have a heart attack.

Sorry to hear about the frequencies of Raisin's dentals, I'm glad to hear that you've found a solution.

I don't suppose you're anywhere near Surrey are you?

In my own case, the bunny is 'burrito'd' - basically swaddled in a towel much like the baby Jesus  ... I realise some may object to that as much as a conscious dental! But it's a very safe way of restraining a rabbit.

Whereabouts in Surrey are you?

We've attempted the bunny burrito at home when we really needed to syringe feed her, she was so quick at moving her paws and leaping away we had no chance. I'm sure a good vet might have more success though.

I'm in Banstead and the bunny specialist we went to is in Epsom, but he doesn't do conscious dentals...

Raisin is also a very sensitive bunny who gets upset very easily. Change of routine, food, travelling etc all seem to upset her. However she copes far better with conscious dentals than she does being at the vets all day for an anaesthetic dental. I think you have to weigh up the stress of that too. Perhaps you could find a vet to show you how they would perform it, just to see how she copes? Then you could decide if it was something you and Daisy would be comfortable with? The vet I use is in Shoreham, near Brighton, so probably not very helpful to you. I found Facebook was a great place to post on various pages to get vet recommendations.
