Sneezing and moist left eye

Thank you, MM. I hope it's one-off though else Thumper will be beside herself if she has to have it done regularly!

Claire said if it doesn't work then she will do x-rays to check the roots, but if there's nothing there she'll do x-rays on her face to check her nasal passages next. She doesn't think it's a tooth though at the moment, so fingers crossed she's right :)

Poor bunny though. She was in a right state this morning, a "do what you want with me, I don't care", which is so unlike her as she's normally pinging about all over the garden. But she's much brighter now, so hopefully gained some relief from the partial flush :)

Claire doesn't know why Thumper's sneezing though, but said that as long as it's a dry sneeze she's not overly concerned at the moment, so at least that's something. But I suppose, thinking about it as I type, get something in your eye and you sneeze don't you? Same thing for a bunny I guess, especially as her tear duct's blocked, perhaps her body is trying to clear it herself by sneezing - the vet expected to see the flush from her eye come down her nose, so logically thinking, sneezing is the body's way of trying to clear the blockage itself maybe? Once the infection/blockage has gone, maybe the sneezing will also stop? Do you see what I mean? So when she started sneezing a couple of weeks ago, that's when the infection was setting in. Damn, I didn't know, but then I suppose how could I, how could anyone. I wonder if it was caused by the dust from the hot weather we had. Just thinking out loud, as it were.

Yes I agree that sneezing is the body's way of getting rid of stuff it doesn't want in there. Equally, sneezing (or with humans blowing their nose) tends to move stuff to the corner of the eye where it can be got rid of.

But you don't know that the sneezing was when the infection was setting in. I've known rabbits sneeze till kingdom come and never have an infection. There's been an awful lot of sneezy rabbits this summer season, so you mustn't beat yourself up about that.

I hope it's a one off as well :D You've got a good vet!

Yes, I guess you're right (about the sneezing) so thank you for that :)

And yes, Claire's ace which is why I ask for her and am disappointed when she's not in and I have to see a different one. Don't get me wrong, I don't doubt any of the others' capabilities, but it's just that Claire's known my bunnies for as long as I have really!

My Nancy had a wet and mucky eye around a year ago and also sneezes.

She has had numerous tear duct flushes and 3 different lots of eye drops . The first time she had a flush she had to be sedated so her teeth were checked at the same time.

When it recurred we saw a different vet at the practice who seemed more confident and all her subsequent flushes have been carried out at the consultation.

She has not had a flush since May which is the longest she has gone since it all started but she does still sneeze sometimes.

Someof the discharge was sent to the lab for analysis and there was in obvious infection so we suspect tooth root issues. I just wish the first vet who sedated her had taken a skull xray so I would know for sure.

I don't really want her to go through that whilst she is in good health and eating well especially as this does not seem to bother her.

Hope your rabbits eye is a one off and responds to the Eyedrops.

Thank you, Den.

Thumper had her eye flushed out again yesterday and it was a success! It came down her nose, along with some pus which confirmed the infection of course, but now the duct is clear - hopefully for good but only time will tell.

I have to continue with the eyedrops for a further week and then stop. If she continues to show pain (she was in pain yesterday morning but an hour after I gave her metacam she was fine) then I'm to take her back, or of course if her eye moistens up again to take her back also, for sedation and x-rays. However, Claire is still very wary as to whether it's teeth related - I hope she's right!

So fingers and paws crossed the eyedrops will clear whatever's left of the infection over the next week and then that'll be it :).

Thank you for your help and kind words over this new issue of Thumper's, it's all been appreciated, as always :) x

Good old Thumper and well done Claire :D

Yeah, I hope it's a one off as well and that you're plain sailing (as ever we can be with rabbits :?) from now on! x

Hi Angie,

Poor Thumper, I hope she will start to feel better now.

I have a sneezy bun Charlotte, she's been doing it for years and it is MUCH worse in Spring and Summer. We've tried antibiotics which made no difference, it's a dry sneeze and she has no other symptoms. So recently the specialist vet came to the conclusion that it must be an allergy of some kind, either to hay or something in the air outside. It's certainly worse when I open the window in their room. I have a humidifier which I put on when her sneezing seems bad which seems to help a bit. Other than that I'm at a loss, but she seems fine and it doesn't bother her.

Thank you MightyMax!

And Gemmapookie, Claire did suggest that Thumper may have developed an allergy for some reason though of course that's only the cause of the sneezing and not the cause of the infection - the two may not be linked and only time will tell on that side.

Thumper's eye is still a bit yucky today but my husband said that's to be expected for the next day or so (he suffers from blocked tear ducts regularly) so I'll give it the week and then ring Claire with the update and see what she says. All I can do, really :) x
