  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Baytril Dosage - Please Help!

Beau Belle

Mama Doe
Morning,

Cookie isn't getting better and I'm worried it's my fault.

The vet gave me medicines in a bag and as I was so worried about Cookie, I forgot to get her to specify (show on syringe) how much I should put in. Having accidentally overdosed a bun a few years ago due to miscommunication cat/dog/rabbit measurement and a huge syringe (thankfully she was fine), I'm *very* weary of it happening again.

The label says:
5.60 x Baytril 2.5% oral solution (100ml) per ml
Give 0.4ml twice per day for 7 days

This is the syringe. Should 0.4 be the tiny amount (less than the 1) or the bigger amount.

I'm so tired and so worried I want to be physically sick - please let me know which dosage is correct. I don't understand the various dosages/syringes and trying to look it up on line has only made me more confused - I'm not thinking straight.

0.4 is the bigger amount on the right. It comes to about half way up the syringe (a one ml syringe). She must weigh around 1.2kg?
This is a good dose for that weight of rabbit if so.

Thinking of you Beau Belle and wishing you loads of love and hugs xx

How funny, I was going to say it sounded like a low dose  My brain has turned to jelly on how to do the calculations but I know I've safely used much larger amounts than that. The 'official' guides usually say 5-10mg/kg twice a day (some still even say 2.5mg/kg); Baytril's own blurb explains why it is more effective if given once daily. My vet has previously said that she finds baytril to be an effective antibiotic but only if given at top end doses (20mg/kg once a day - i.e. the same overall amount as the 10mg/kg twice a day but in one dose). I've had good success with ear-based abscesses on this regime in the past.

Santa, it's interesting you say using Baytril has been successful with ear abscesses. I have always pushed for penicillin injected. I shall rethink in future :)

Regarding the dosages, I was surprised recently when one vet recommended a particular dose of Baytril and then the specialist I visited was horrified at the dosage and told me to halve it, for the same rabbit!

It worked perfectly at the lower dosage :D
