Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit Shaking Head

cara

Alpha Buck
Teddy was shaking his head so began treatment with xeno.

After first dose he continued to shake his head so mentioned this to the vet, who took a scraping. Nothing was found although 'a possible egg' - but unsure. He does have waxy ears.

Now had 2 doses and 1 to go, but I still see him shaking his head. Other possibilities please?

I did suspect ear mites, as although I personally couldn't see anything - he has been prone to getting them.

The vet did a really good inspection as well as taking a scraping but no real indication of anything untoward.

He isn't constantly shaking his head but I catch him doing it more often than is usual. Other than the head shakes, he is perfectly well.

Would head shaking alone be an indication of an infection?

It might just be the build up of wax which is annoying him. Is he a Lop and are both his ears in the normal position?

No, not a lop and both ears look 'normal, inside and out. It's a mystery as usually even if sometimes we can't be sure of a cause, there is generally some ideas :?

In addition, have had a dreadful weekend as let the pair of them into the garden (bonded about 3-4 weeks) and it has gone pair shaped as they have majorly fell out again and Teddy has again incurred a wound. Now confined back to base and I am having to keep a very close eye on them. So stressful!

Ruby does this - especially after a long session of having her head stroked. She is an up eared bun and I know her ears are clear and healthy. I think she does it because her ears have been flat back for a while. She also gives herself a quick groom. It's like her little post stroking routine.

Could it be that Teddy is just giving his ears a 'stretch'?

I would like to think so! Feel doubtful though as he does shake his head/ears more often at the moment. It remains a mystery :?
