Frusemide Dose and Medication Calculation Help Please

Hi all,

I am hoping you can help. I am trying to understand medication calculations and I was practising with my rabbits medication.

My rabbit has been prescribed Frusemide. She is 2.2kg and have been given a 5% solution and a dose of 0.04ml per day.

As far as I am aware a 5% solution is 50mg/ml. So 50mg * 0.04 = 2mg dose. So this is effectively a dose of 0.9mg per kg?

Is this a normal dose? Am I correct?
I have looked on line and found a couple of website with rabbit does but they differ greatly:

Rabbit wiki (http://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Common_drug_dosages_for_rabbits) suggests 0.3-2 mg/kg
Petwebsite (http://www.thepetsite.co.uk/vetknowledge/health/diseases/rabbitdrugs.htm) suggests 5-10mg/kg twice daily.

Thanks in advance

Hello Happybunny

I'm very sorry your rabbit needs furosemide.

I have checked with the Textbook of Rabbit Medicine by Frances Harcourt Brown and her dosage is one of the ones you quoted:

0.3 - 2 mg/kg

This is IV, IM or sub cut. Are you giving this as an injection under the skin, or orally?

Have you double checked with the prescribing vet as these dosages can be complicated and also dependant upon the level of rabbit's need for the drug x

Thank you both. She is having it by injection (sub cut) so it sounds like she has been put on a middle dose.

The vet suspects heart problems but x-rays have not been able to help as her lungs are filled with fluid and obscuring her heart. The drug is to try and help clear her lungs.

She has been on anti-biotics for 2 weeks and they have made no different to her breathing so she is now on a different anti-biotic, the diuretic and bisolvon.
