  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Is this a high enough Metacam dose?

Are you able to take it to a compounding pharmacy and have it made into a liquid? That way you can draw up the right amount. You can get them to flavour it also, if that'd make it easier for giving it to him.

I doubt there is a chemist near me that could do that. I did ask a couple of chemists about make the dose smaller but they couldn't . I live in a rural area but thanks for suggestion.

Aww Nicky, I'm so glad they have given you some tramadol for Cody! :) honey was on 50g tablets, but they just crushed it into a water solution and I used to syringe her 0.3ml! Will the vets not do this for you?

Ooh by the way, what eye drops are they prescribing next for Cody? The anti-infamortary eye drops I mentioned previously is ocufen, kept in the fridge like chlorophenical! :) oh & after checking with the vet earlier, Harvey had Remend for corneal ulcers as our 4th different one, I can't quite remember who but someone on here recommended it and after my referral vets speaking to an eye specialist, they gave us remend and this really helped to get on top of them before he obviously scratched them again. But as it's quite a thick and gloopy drop it helps keep it lubricated! Don't know if this helps at all? Xx

Hi Ruth. No my local vets couldn't do anything - not very good r they! I have decided to make a 10cm line of tramadol powder and give Cody 1cm so that would be 5mg. I would rather be under than over until I get the 10mg tablets on Monday. I am just afraid of giving him too much.

Cody has just finished a 16 day course of chloramphenicol eye drops and has to see the eye vet on 18th May to see if the ulcer has improved . I know it's not watering anywhere near as much and he has stopped scratching v the area just below so fur is growing back. I will defo mention the Remenham if he hasn't had an improvement . Thanks for that Ruth - every bit of info helps.

Cody is very lucky he has you to fight his corner Nicky :thumb:

I checked out your video, but can't add any more to what Ruth has said - she's given great advice all through :)

Sending vibes for an improved Code in the very near future xx

Thanks Max . I do think he knows as he is such a good patient !

Cody has perked up a good bit more today after increasing the metacam to 0.5ml twice a day now and was nibbling in the garden for a while so have held off the Tramadol just to see as don't want to use it until I have to and to see if this metacam dosage may do the trick for a while. But for now he's very comfortable and was pottering around the garden a good bit more. So Codes happier and so am I so I am having a big glass of red wine now to unwind!!

Haha, I had one earlier for the same reason

Hiro is on 1ml Metacam twice daily and 0.24ml of tramadol 3-4 times daily. I was told he was on some 'good painkillers'!!! He has just had a big op though so it's a pretty high dose I think xx

Just a wee update on Cody. So he has been on 0.5ml dog metacam twice daily and 10mg tramadol in the morning - got the smaller tablets on Wednesday . So last night for the first time in about 2 months he was eatting his hay bales !!!! And this morning wrecking the place by shoving his cardboard boxes about, throwing food bowls about , running out for food to the middle of the floor! So he has really improved so much and looks so much more happier and comfortable :) thanks for the tramadol recommendation. I am only giving once a day for now and that seems to be enough. He is for a check up on Wednesday with vet and eye vet so hope ulcer has improved but I think it has as his eye isn't watering anywhere near as much. As Cody will probably be on metacam for life what's the cheapest way to get it ?? It's costing me £15 for 32ml so that's only about a months supply.
