my foraging diary

I have just been looking at earlier posts on this thread and knew I had seen it before. I had took a photo in May 2016 and figured out it was yellow woodland poppy. It's page 20 of this thread:lol:

I'm glad you've got it sorted :D I looked back at page 20. Gosh is it really five years ago  Nice to look back though :)

I can't believe it's that long. I thought I'd share my new idea for drying the forage. It's made from c+c grids with a plastic deer mesh I used to build my cat proof fence. It's 2 shelves that good upwards for storage in the aviary. I just use garden wife to keep them clipped up when not in use. I'm making more soon lol. If you click on the photos you can see them better.

Just been foraging and took loads of photos of common stuff most of us pick, while it's all in the early stages of growing. Thought it might help having photos all together again so anyone new doesn't have to read loads of the thread. If anyone has any I've missed off please add them.
I've tried to take a close up and then one of the whole plant. The hazel is of the leaves then of the grouping of the tree trunks, which is easy to spot most time because of the many trees grouped together and the bronze looking bark. I will get cleavers willow herb and cow parsley tomorrow.

Well done :) Really useful pictures for any unsure foragers. Plants can look so different at different stages.

Yeah I agree omi. I think I spotted some dock today, which I've never seen when it's small before. I'm going to get some pics of that too. I brought 2 different kinds home but I think the smaller one, which I thought might be sorrel, is really lords and ladies.
Of all the forage I can ID I can't spot a sorrel.
I know joeyandboo picks dock so maybe she can post pics of some she picks

Just reading about wild strawberry - can buns eat this? And what about the tiny fruits as a treat?

We have a great spot we harvest wild strawberry every year and make yummy strawberry jam. My goodness it's quite some work harvesting enough of it, though. Worth it - it's so tasty.

I feed Dock, but only when it's youngish and not in flower. In my view its appearance is exactly the same as a mature Dock leaf, just smaller and a bit paler green. I've never found wild Sorrel, although have a small amount of French Sorrel grown from seed. We have a garden full of Lords and Ladies. They multiply very readily :)

Yes, Wild Strawberry leaves and fruit is fine for bunnies. Gosh I can imagine how long it would take to pick sufficient for jam! But, yes I agree, very tasty :)

I think I've narrowed the one I'm going to pick. I think it's young curly dock. I will try to find some later. Them lords and ladies scare me. I'm only going to feed very young leaves.
I collect enough different types but I keep coming across these plants. Thanks on I I would love to have your knowledge. Have you got an online resource I could look at to learn the different plant families from.

I don't think it's just knowledge. Experience in observing plants at different stages is in my view equally important. I actually don't find any online sites that beneficial. I use a combination of two field guides, one ancient, one pretty new. I find that very often the plant becomes much more identifiable in one book that the other. I particularly rate the Rose book and find it gives complete information about a plant, including for example the seed heads. These are the two I use. You might be able to find used copies.

That's a great idea. It's a lot easier to recognize and ID a plant by watching a video.
Just back from foraging and took some more photos.

WILLOWHERB. The veins can be red and don't run straight to the edge of the leaf, it sort of curves.

Thank you Omi! I will try Oscar on some :D The leaves are already out here, but not the fruits yet. He already loves bramble and will try him on raspberry when that comes out.

Oh gosh it takes forever  Lasts us the year though so worth it!

If anyone wants a little taster post this year just give me a heads up (I can tell you full ingredients for it, although there's not many, mainly sugar  ) and I can send some little pots of it out.

I was out for 3 hours today. Now I#ve got to dry most of it. Lots of baby lambs too. I was watching one dig in the earth & then fold her legs down in to her cool spot  just like my bunnies do. And a calf & his mum :love:came to nosey at me over the wall (maybe could smell my foragey goodies)

I got a fair amount of raspberry but the leaves are still small, loads of just flowering hawthorn, some really juicy new bramble clusters, so many dandelions ...in lesser quantities cow parsley & reed grass (only for fresh feeding), hogweed, hazel, meadowsweet (just leaves), dock, sow thistle, sticky bud, herb robert & mini ribwort

I thought today was supposed to be cold, its been gorgeous here (bit peopley but I guess you can't have it all )
