Please Note - Medical Advice
Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.
You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.
We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.
Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.
Elphie is very bright this morning compared to yesterday. She's a trooper: eats her recovery feed like a pro, and still eating pellets and hay. She's tolerating the sub-qs. I think they stress me out more than her! Even so, there's a very long way to go and I need to keep weighing her to keep track of this.
1.57kg tonight. Down a little compared to yesterday night. Was really hoping she'd cross the 1.6kg barrier.
1.58kg tonight. Now she's gorging on oats!
Bless her
She really likes her oats! I have an adorable video of her devouring a strawberry I need to upload too.
And! Exciting news! Elphie had her usual overnight loss of about 80g, but only dipped to 1.52kg this morning! She's going in the right direction. Love my old girl; she has such a huge amount of fighting spirit.
Dock leaves are a NO
They have high tannin and oxalic acids which are bad for the kidneys. This is the same as with spinach leaves which you also shouldn't feed to rabbits.
I didn't know rabbits could have dock leaves. I've got a garden full of them.
Googled and arrived back at RU... parsnipbun from 2008:
Just checked FHB's site and she says dock is ok. :thumb:
So glad Elphie is doing well
Interesting.. I'm sure I read on here that they were ok prior to the plant going on flower... I will continue feeding them, though not to an excessive level. Shame, as Elphie really does adore them. She kept eating it above everything else on offer.
