Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

What is the longest you've kept a rabbit on penicillin?

I've recently treated my rabbit for 6 weeks on penicillin G procaine (SA). He initially had a week of daily shots, then we spaced out to every second day.
He's been off it now for a little over a week and I've noticed his "sneezing" has returned and sometimes hear a gag/cough.
He initially went on for a facial abscess (surgically treated) but it also happened to stop the sneezing at the time. Although, I tend to think of it as his trying to clear nose then involuntary sneezing.

He's due back at the vet this week and I'll likely discuss putting him back on it.

Just curious to hear if anyone has used it longer? I thought 6 weeks would have been enough. Maybe I should have done 8??

Wondering if should ask vet about using a decongestant also? Or using a second med with nebuliser?

I've had rabbits on penicillin for much longer than that. Sometimes lifelong where indicated. I would be interested to hear what your vet thinks, particularly as he's had a facial abscess too.

I've used Bisolvon (thins the mucous) which is also helpful. Nebulising with saline (unless the vet thinks a second abx would be useful) is also helpful. People sometimes use F10 to nebulise with, but I wouldn't ever use it on my rabbits.

Good luck with your bunny x

Thanks for sharing! I did wonder if they could be on it life long. Did you use the long acting type when it was long term?

Yes I did. Sometimes I gave it every day even though long acting .. There's so many permutations, depending on your vet, the rabbit's condition, and your ability to keep giving injections (which day after day for months and months on end, can be wearing - trying to find a new spot on your rabbit that hasn't already been pierced )

I had a rabbit on daily depocillin type injections for well over a year for a dental / jaw abscess. We had no problems with the antibiotic and it kept the infection in hand - there never was going to be a cure in this case.
