  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I wonder if he knows she is poorly. He's been constantly sitting as close as he can get to her.

How lovely

The support of a partner can never be underestimated :)

It seems to be constantly changing one minute it's terrible then the next I've looked and she's completely normal. I'm trying not to read into it incase I'm just looking into something that's not there and getting my hopes up. Tuesday cannot come soon enough!!

My bunny only had one eye & her head tilt was so severe her head was at 180 degrees constantly, it was about 5 weeks before we saw her eye that had sight :( I think its a positive sign its more stable at times. Little relapses are normal too (just saying, hopefully your bun will make a full & complete recovery). Mouse we adopted in May knowing she had an EC positive test & head tilt (her story stole my heart, the stress of returning to rescue a 2nd time brought on her head tilt so we wanted to offer her a truly forever home). Mouse straightened up pretty quickly although still goes a tad wonky if she is feeling vulnerable.

What my specialist vet advised for both my EC bunnies was to dose with panacur for 10 days prior to events that are likely to be stressful ...moving house / bonding / vets visits (if they are far away & your bunnies aren't happy travellers). It could be worth discussing this with your vet. I haven't heard of many other people adopting this strategy though which surprises me. Obviously panacur like most meds is not without its risks & I wouldn't necessarily advise this without your vets agreement

So sorry to hear about bun being so unwell.

But - I'd like to share that they can recover. We didn't think our Poppet would, she was so poorly, but 18 months later she'd still with us and back to her naughty self. You wouldn't know by looking at her.

It took about 3 months of constant loving, feeding and support, but she pulled through.

Sending warm vibes xxx

Update: had a big conversation with the vet who seemed lovely. He's pleased with the small amounts of progress she has made the last couple of days.
He's a lot more hopeful about the whole situation. She's going to see him next Tuesday as long as she doesn't change for the worse between now and then.
Another plus is for the first time in 6 days she ran to the cage door when I went over to it and called her name!! You don't realise how many lovely little things they do until they suddenly stop doing them. We're still taking every days as it comes
But I can't help but feel a little more positive every time she starts to show her normal behaviour. These past few days have been a complete emotional rollercoaster!!

You are so right, Stiglet :D

I think it's good to be positive, as this sends out a good energy to her and a good energy is always healing.

I hope she'll continue to make baby steps of progress and if possible, great leaps too :D

It sounds as though she is showing some improvement which is very encouraging news. The journey to recovery may be long, with a few set backs along the way, but recovery is possible. Sending lots more vibes for her xx

Its a long road isn't it, Milo has had EC and his symptoms started off as the ever so slightest head tilt and rolling eyes.

He was on the Panacur but I must admit I think the Metacam helped to no end! Considering how poorly he was he seemed to make an improvement very quickly on that!

Wish you all the luck in the world with your bun, its not a pleasant journey at all. xx

I've just caught up with this thread and have seen the excellent advice offered to date. I'm glad your rabbit is responding to treatment and is still able to carry on as normal. It is much easier to deal with if they are still mobile and able to eat and drink by themselves.

I had a rabbit with really extreme head tilt. Her head was fixed right back to her spine / shoulder and she couldn't stand for weeks - she rolled if left unsupported so had to be confined to a small area padded round with rolled up towels, hand fed and cleaned up daily. She recovered after several months of intense treatment. There were a few relapses but within about 6 months she was back outside in the run with only a minimal head tilt.

Did you manage to get some anti-inflammatory medication for her (eg Metacam)? The Panacur treats the organism (EC), but the inflammation caused by the organism can leave the lasting effects such as head tilt - so it is essential that this is addressed as well to avoid any permanent damage.

Treatment may continue for longer than 30 days if it is needed - especially anti-inflammatories or antibiotics (if ear infection is suspected), so don't be afraid to ask for more if you think it is needed.

Don't forget that you need to do a radical clean (eg bleach or steam clean) of everything the rabbits come into contact with on days 21 and 28 of the Panacur treatment - this helps to break the lifecycle of the organism which is shed in the urine.

Thank you for your advice I didn't realise about the deep clean is this with special bleach or normal?? And obviously how long do you leave it before allowing the buns to go back in?
The vet doesn't want to give her metacam just yet. He's seeing her next Tuesday and said if her head tilt has not got any better by that point then he will want to look to adding more medication to what she's on. He was pleased with the progress she's making by just being on the Panacur at the moment.

I'm so thankful for all the support and advice i've been given on here. I would never have had the confidence to seek a second opinion let alone a third! I was naive enough to trust that my vet knew the best option and no doubt would have followed his advice. I'm now more determined than ever to become a more clued up bunny-mum and it's made me realise I care about them both far more than I ever imagined I would.

Thank you to all of you who have shared your stories about EC. It's made me feel so much more positive and hopeful that she will recover from it xx
