Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

So Honey has had problems with her teeth for about 4 months. her front ones suddenly decided not to meet properly and grew up towards her nose. the vet has tried burring them regularly to get them to grow the right way again but she is still having issues. A month ago she had her back teeth burred but this has made no difference either. he already said last time that as a last resort she would need her front teeth completely removed. Im going in tomorrow but am terrified! I really dont want to lose her and its such a major thing. Does anyone have any advice if she does have them out tomorrow? im worried about getting her to eat afterwards... infection.... the lot

My Herbie has no Incisors. He was abandoned and then rescued, I got him after that. The rescue took out his incisors, but one and a few peg teeth grew back in. I got the op done again, and then some peg teeth grew back in. Now he needs to get his peg teeth burred every 6 - 8 weeks, he copes fine with that.

Make sure that you insist on getting Metacam home with you for a few days after the op, some vets are not very good at offering it automatically.

Get some soft foods like herbs to tempt the wee one to eat after the op.

Good luck vibes from me.

Also, when she heals up she should cope fine with most foods, just some veg needs to be chopped up or cut into strips :)

My wee boy pre-op, the day he was rescued!

awwww poor boy! that looks painful! thankfully my vet is a specialist so i know shes in good hands but i still worry like crazy. She has been on pain meds anyway just in case her back ones were the issue as to the incisors suddenly not lining up. so nervous!

Good luck tomorrow, I will be thinking of you. One of mine is going for a dental tomorrow too, it's only been 7 weeks since the last one-damn teeth !

If the front teeth don't work well, then it's the very best thing you can do for Honey!

They should give you pain relief and antibiotics for her, and keep a regular check up to make sure the sockets heal nicely.

Softened pellets would be good for her. When the gums have healed, she should be able to eat hay and readigrass, and food chopped up small or shredded (grated).

In the meantime a little tempting grated parsnip and apple, or other veggies she may like - soft herbs like coriander are quite tempting!

Good luck for tomorrow xx

I know many bunnies without front teeth that do just fine! They veg needs to be cut up more or grated, but they should still handle hay well :)

Some buns just never get the hang of pulling the hay out with their gums, and in which case I free feed readigrass. I have never had any problems doing this :thumb:
