snuffles

Hi,

I had to take Daisy to the vet today because she hasn't been eating her food as fast as normal. The vet checked her over and said she sounded quite chesty and thinks it may be snuffles. Daisy has been at the vet twice in the last 2 weeks with a neck wound and was antibiotics for 10 days because of this and they stopped on Tuesday. Is snuffles something that develops really quickly? She started eating less on Thursday.

We have been given pain relief and antibiotics and are due to back on Monday for another checkup. Do all rabbits with snuffles sneeze as I haven't heard Daisy sneeze at all recently? I also haven't noticed any discharge, although her face is always a bit wet as she has had weepy eyes for years.

Is there anything else I can do to help her in the meantime?

Thanks, Laura

It sounds as though the infection is on her lungs and in such cases sneezing and a snotty nose do not always occur. What abx is she on, not the same one that she has just finished a course of I hope ? How did she sustain the neck injury ?

Is Daisy eating and pooing better now ?

Is Daisy spayed ?

She is eating but still a lot slower than normal. She is still pooing as well although they are slightly smaller than normal. She is spayed as well. We have no idea how she got the neck wound. The emergency vet said it could of been an abscess but I never saw any pus to confirm this- there is pictures of this thread here

She was on enrofloxacin last week and the have give me baytril this time. I'm not sure what they are going to do when I go back on Monday. They squeezed me in today when I phoned for appointment so hopefully there will be more time on Monday.

Hi Laura

I remember answering on your other thread  Sorry to hear about Daisy.

Enroflaxacin is the same antibiotic as Baytril. Has that wound on her neck healed up now and not left a lump behind?

Rabbits with snuffles don't always sneeze. The infection often stays in the nasal passages, so you could get the vet to sound her lungs to make sure they are clear. Hopefully they will be.

A change of antibiotic could do the trick and help - perhaps consider Septrin?

Some people also use nebulising to help get the mucous out of nasal passages/tubes. You could also think about Bisolvon, which dilutes the mucous and makes it easier to pass. Discuss with your vet when you go.

Good luck :)

Her neck wound has healed really well and just has a wee bit of scab still on it. I was surprised at how well it healed. Thanks for your advice- I never know what to ask them at the vet!

Ah you're welcome :thumb:

Sometimes good to go armed with a list - check them off. I do that with the GP too

My usual rabbit specialist is on maternity leave just now so I'm a bit wary of anything that the other ones tell me. I like to check everything they tell me with people on here and the good rabbit websites. You guys on here are probably better qualified on rabbits than many of the vets out there :D
