  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

How Long for Baytril Course for Rabbit Ear Infection.

I am totally cynical about returning for an assessment to be honest. Rosie's condition is amazing considering how poorly she was and her age etc. And Rosie's initial consultation turned up nothing - no ear infection was visible although vet did appear to do a good inspection. He just commented on the gunk, which he thought best to leave alone and I left with just an increase in pain meds (which I suggested myself). And, sorry to repeat myself, but had I not rang up after the appointment and requested antibiotics "just in case it is an ear-infection", I doubt Rosie would be here today. So I am dubious as to whether there is any point to going back.

As an aside really, I am assuming she had an ear-infection only on the basis of her stunning recovery, which began immediately she started taking them. But the ear-infection is only a guess really taking into account her off balance and swaying symptoms? Is it a fair guess in anyone's opinion?

Ear infections can be hard to confirm without an xray, but gunky ears, headtilt, head-shaking, loss of balance etc are all symptoms. If you're not confident in your vet's ability, I'd recommend changing to one you do trust, whether that's another vet at the practice who has more rabbit experience, or at a different surgery altogether.

I do understand totally. It's very wearing visiting vets (and paying them) to feel they don't do their job properly.

Given there was gunk in Rosie's ear, I am surprised he didn't recommend something to put in to clean them with?

No, on the contrary, he suggested leave alone as not easy and could make matters worse :?

Thanks for everyone's replies. Unfortunately need to start another thread as noticed something else when giving meds tonight.
