Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Best age for neutering?

Young Bun
Hi, I have a 12 week old french lop male and I want to have him neutered so he can be matched up with a girl bunny (hopefully from a rescue).

I've seen some people saying to do it early and others saying to wait as he's a large breed.

When is it best to do it? Thanks

Can I hijack a little and ask what age for Netherland Dwarfs too? I'm getting two brothers in August and I keep reading conflicting information, from 11 weeks right up to 4 months or even later.

The time the testicles descend is usually when the Vet will castrate them. Some come through at about 12 weeks, which I feel is a bit young, to put them through an op, some are later. I've just had a little boy done, he was 18 weeks old. Also I think they must be at least 1 kg in weight.

My vet said their was a minimum weight. Too but I can't recall what it was...

Every vet will have a different idea of what they think is ideal we say for males ideally 6 month but if over 2kg Anne testicles descended 4months is the earliest we would consider

has been bookmark, this seems like a very interesting thread

For a French Lop I would prefer no younger than five months :)
