Depocillian or Zirthromax for sinnitus

So Rosie has been on septrin for 2 weeks now for sinnitus for 2 weeks now after X-rays showed lungs and teeth were clear. She was doing a lot of chewing / grinding and I think that the septrin has been given her belly ache and making her a bit dull also with reduced appetite. She is eating but won't eat hay. She is eating a bit of grass on the garden. I am not giving her her dose this evening as it's not helping. You should see improvement by now shouldn't u ?? I am speaking to the vet tomorrow morning and I think she might suggest moving to Zirthromax as she had talked about this. I have read really good things about Zirthromax but also read about the bad reactions too. Rosie was on depocillian injections for her tooth root assess and had no problems at all on it. Would depocillian work for her sinnitus ?? Would it still be effective even though she has been on it before?? Which would be best to try first Zirthromax or depocillian?? Or a different antibitic??

What I would do is ask my Vet about having a complete break from all abx for a few days and then review. Sinusitis. if that is what the problem is although the skull xrays apparently do not reflect that, then the problem may be viral and/or chronic inflammatory sinusitis. No abx will have any effect on that. Both Depocillin and Zithromax are categorised as 'high risk' for causing gut dysbiosis. Whilst they do have a place in the treatment regime of some bacterial infections I would want a bit more evidence that bacteria was actually the issue before risking giving either Depocillin or Zithromax to a Rabbit who is already showing signs of GI disturbance.

If the Vet feels that a break from abx is not appropriate and you decide to procede then personally I would opt for Depocillin. At least you know that Rosie was OK on it before. Zithromax is an 'unknown' and I would need my trusted Vet to convince me that giving it was a risk that really had to be taken.

I hope that all goes well tomorrow xx

Thanks for ur reply Jane. The vet did actually mention taking a break from the antibiotics also . I had already decided myself that even if other antibiotics were on the cards I would want Rosie to have a break anyway to get back to feeling normal in her stomach . How would u ddetermine if bacteria was present ?? Another swab test ?? Or if it's imflamation sinnitus is that just treating with metacam ?? Yes think my gut tells me to try depocillin first also if we went that route. Flip it's soo complicated. I will ask her too about the endoscope for future also.

I never got the echinacia that Mighty Max recommended but i got the one by A Vogel as I saw it in the chemist today. Wonder will thst be ok. It has a bit of alcohol in it.

Hi Nicky

Just seen your post. I have never had any problem with bunnies and Depocillin. My specialist (who sees only rabbit patients) also says she has never had an adverse reaction having prescribed it hundreds of times. Which is good news :)

Metcam will certainly treat the inflammation, but your vet will have to make sure the dose is high enough. I have looked at a couple of old bottles of Metacam I have around and the dose my rabbit was prescribed recently was double that. Thoughts on Metacam dosage have changed over the last couple of years.

Vogel is a very good brand :thumb: If you want to heat off the alcohol you can put a few drops into a teaspoon and hold it over a flame for a few seconds.

Thanks Mighty Max for tip on alcohol. What dosage do u give ?? Yeah Rosie was ok on depocillian in the past also. Wonder is it commonly used for sinnitus tho.

Oh Rosie is currently on 0.5ml metacam one a day at the moment. She is 1.7kg. Wonder if that dosage is high enough??

Is it the Dog Metacam (1.5mg/ml) or the Cat Metacam (0.5mg/ml) ?

The dose range my Vet uses is O.3mg-0.6mg/kg/day.

So if you have the DOG Metacam that would equate to a dose range of 0.2ml-0.4ml/kg/day

If you have the CAT Metacam it would equate to 0.6ml-1.2ml/kg/day

But only your Vet can advise you to increase the dose Rosie is on.

There is some information about the Pharmacokinetics of meloxicam in rabbits here:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16521861

And some more information here:

Also, there is a new BSAVA Exotics Formulary out now, hopefully your Vet will have obtained a copy. It contains revised details about various drugs and doses for Rabbits who are catagorised as an Exotic species in Veterinary Medicine.

Good luck at the Vets today xx

I would give two or three drops morning and evening. Good luck at the vets, I hope all goes well with Rosie and Cody x

Jane it's the dog metacam.

Might Max think i might leave back the A Vogel Echinacia and order the Galens Garden without alcohol and i see they have other stuff which may help. Any recommendations for other stuff from Galens Garden? ?

Spoke to vet and Rosie is to take a break for 1-2 weeks of antibiotics which is why wanna try the natural stuff. I see u posted a year or so back that u used Holland and Barrett echinacia and goldenseal tablets - would u reccommendatins them over the Galens Garden liquid echinacia? ?

Am taking Cody to vets this evening as vet thinks it sounds like EC but wants to check his ears to rule out inner ear infection.

Sorry just realised it wasn't Galens brand u recommended. Ok will keep A Vogel and heat it to get rid of alcohol. 3 drops is that mixed in a little water and syringed into her or in her water bowl ?? I know i am an absolute pain at the moment with all my posts am even annoying myself !!

You are not annoying me at all Nicky

I give it in a syringe, as I want to make sure it all gets in there.

You are right about the Holland and Barrett Echinacea and Goldenseal. H&B have changed the brand to their own from Good 'N Natural, which I don't find anything like so good. So I sourced the previous brand from the US and had it shipped over, as I can open the capsules and I am used to their dosage and how well it works.

If you can find a good herbal capsule of the Echinacea and Goldenseal (or just Echinacea) that you can open, you can sprinkle a bit onto food.
