  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Young Bun
So yesterday morning I took my two buns for their annual boosters. All was well, the vet said they were fit & healthy.
Took them home, popped them in their cage & that was that.
Gone in this morning to feed & clean & found a food bowl still half full (which is unheard of) and yesterday's newspaper in their toilet area is still pristine.
I have checked the rest of their cages in case they have decided to relocate their toilet area but everywhere else is clean too.
Is this normal...are they in some sort of shock after their jabs which has stopped their bowels..I'm getting worried.

Hello

No, it is not really 'normal' although stress (from a Vet trip) can sometimes cause a Rabbit to stop eating which in turn will cause their GI tract to slow down (no poo). You need to contact your Vet as your Rabbits may both be in 'Gut Stasis' and if this is the case then they will both require treatment. There is some more detailed information about GI Stasis here:

It is important not to delay seeking advice from your Vet, good luck xx

Did your rabbits eat anything last night after their vet visit? If they haven't eaten anything yet, please ring your vet surgery asap and talk with them. You will need to get them on meds to help their appetite and pooing.

The vaccine can have a reaction in some rabbits, giving them a temperature and feeling 'off colour'. Your vet will be able to advise what to do.

From the Data sheet:

Adverse reactions
A transient temperature increase of 1-2°C can occur. A small, non-painful swelling (maximum 2 cm diameter) at the injection site is commonly observed within the first two weeks after vaccination. The swelling will resolve completely by 3 weeks after vaccination.

Many thanks for your replies.
I topped up their food bowl this morning & gave them a big pile of garden forage, which they both leapt on eagerly, when I checked on them 30 mins later there was poos & wees in their toilet!
Very strange & I'm not sure what that was all about but they both seem fine now.

Oh great :thumb:

Maybe it was the transient 'off colour' from having the vaccination. Hope all continues to be well! x
