  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit chin flat on ground

Young Bun
My rabbit is nearly 8 years old and has got an eye infection caused by pasteurella which he has antibiotic eye drops for. However the past few days I've noticed he has been sitting (all feet touching the ground) with his chin flat on the ground. Am I right in thinking this is a sign of ill health? And if so, is it likely the eye infection causing this or something else?

Didn't want to read this an run.

The only advice I could offer would be to phone and double check with your vet

My rabbit lies with her chin flat on the ground, but this is usually when she is relaxing/sleeping.

Is your rabbit sitting up with his chin in floor ?

Hope he's okay ❤️

My bun only did this when he was poorly. Some buns do it anyway. If its not usual for your bunny I would tell the vet.

Thanks for your responses. Yes he does it sometimes while sitting up, as opposed to when relaxing stretched out. I've never seen him do it before.

My buns do this all the time, especially when they get cosy in front of the fire.

However, if it's not normal for yours, then I should take it as a sign something needs doing. I wouldn't assume it's to do with his eye necessarily. I hope the vet can point you in the right direction after a check up :thumb:

It's not unusual for rabbits to rest their chin on the floor but I would use your gut instincts to decide whether he looks comfortable or not.
