Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

URTI - improvement but...

So, Hector has had 19 days of baytril. The original course was extended at my request (with which the vet agreed). He also had about 8 days of tiacil (until he put up such a fight, I stopped).

He is very clearly much better. He is racing about; his eyes are less weepy; and his temperature appears to be normal. He's eaten well throughout.

He was making a sort of snoring noise when lying down and when eating. He sneezed a couple of times (weeks back - trigger for going to vet in first place).

The only residual noise appears to be when eating and, importantly, not every time he eats. I've caught a snippet on video.

Does this suggest more antibiotics or wait and see?

Views welcome please. We run out of antibiotics tomorrow. We go to see the really good vet on Thursday.

(Ps. Sorry, hutch clean happens in the morning but VERY STRICTLY after I've provided his furriness breakfast first!! )

I'll be following this thread with interest, as Hettie has got a URI at the moment which sounds very similar to what Hector has. One runny eye (cloudy), sneezing and laboured breathing when stressed. Had 2 weeks of injectible antibiotics (not actually sure what it was but assume penicillin?) which cleared up the sneezing and laboured breathing but her eye is still weepy (but now clear)

Hope Hector picks up soon - I'm debating whether to take Hettie back to vets too (next stage Xrays to check not teeth roots. Pretty sure it's not teeth as she's eating hay like a trooper and if it was, it would be too painful to eat hay?)

Oh poor Hettie!

Tooth roots had crossed my mind too but, like Hettie, he's eating everything (apart from hay which he never has!). Willow branches, forage, SS pellets, fresh stuff together with ripping his favourite cardboard box so I find it hard to believe he has any pain from his teeth at all.

It is a worry though. At least he's behaving like "Hector" now rather than down in the dumps.

I know how hard it is to decide whether the stress of a vets visit is the right thing. :(

So, more baytril for a week and then look at changing antibiotic if it still hasn't totally shifted. We all agree that it is going in the right direction.

A different eye drop (Fucithalmic) as there is still a residual bit of gunk in the eye and I still think the Tiacil might have been causing a bit of irritation (although it was hard to say - the eye was bloodshot but was it the infection? Was he just creating a fuss with application or did it hurt?)

He's so clearly very much better and my guess is that the infection is just a stubborn one. Fingers crossed it finally shifts though. :(

I'm glad that he is responding to the abx, even if it is slowly. I have known a few Rabbits who have reacted to Tiacil, so it's not unheard of. Has the Vet suggested flushing the nasolacrimal ducts if the infection has not completely cleared after this course of treatment ?

It sounds to me that there might have been a bit of a reaction to the Tiacil.

You can carefully press under the eye on the line of the tear duct to encourage further gunk out. Forgive me if I'm telling you something you already know!

I'm glad to hear things are improving :thumb:

Thank you. "Not yet" is the answer to the tear duct flush. I think he is thinking it doesn't seem bad enough in Terms of eye discharge. Nothing comes out If you press for example. I wouldn't rule it out though. :)

Thank you!

Not at all, all input is useful. The vet pressed the tear duct but nothing came out which I suppose could be good or bad.

Well I suppose that's good! Trouble is with a wonky tear duct, gunk can build up again ... and again.

I had a rabbit who had regular tear duct flushes throughout his life - every six weeks.

In the end the vet showed me how to do it and gave me the kit. It's a delicate operation and needs an extremely steady hand, but I also had a very willing rabbit!

Well, he's still well in himself but his nose is still snuffly and his eyes are still producing stuff. His chest remains clear.

The vet has taken him off all meds for 48 hours to take a sample for analysis. He'll probably switch him to septrin on Friday evening and resume the new eye drops (incidentally, Hector is ok with the new drops so I think it was a tiacil reaction).

Slow progress but we're doing ok, I think.

Off to forage now for more treats!!

Aaaww .. sounds like he has a good vet who knows his stuff :thumb: And a caring and devoted owner who will stop at nothing!

Good luck with the foraging. Still a bit of daylight left .. :D

Thank you. He has a lovely vet, well two actually!!

I'm all foraged out now! So, I went for a hot bath. Bless Hector's little heart, he's asleep on my clothes on the bathroom floor

Yes I have one who follows me into the bathroom as well  It's so sweet, isn't it?

When I came back from the Frances Harcourt Brown conference I put my little case on the landing. It was open as I was about to take the clothes out and put them away. Until I saw my little bun sitting atop the clothes - in fact he reneged on his comfy bed in his bedroom and took residence on my case on the landing

Well, we finally have real progress.

The Baytril provided some relief but, last weekend I noticed increased eye discharge and a few sneezes. He even had some nasal discharge which looked identical to the stuff coming out of his eyes. So....

Vets Monday and a course of septrin. We've also finally got a good sample of the discharge and the results show and infection. It's not particularly responsive to Baytril but is to Septrin which fits with what I've seen. He's much much brighter again. :thumb:

I'm getting some "special" eye drops on Monday too so it looks like we, finally, have real progress.

Fortunately, he's been relatively well throughout all of this with days "under the weather" at worst so it hasn't been too bad. I'm also pleased that we might avoid a tear duct flush.

He's currently stampeding around upstairs so he must be feeling better. :)

That's great news ! Hope the Septrin irradiates the infection xx

This is good news SJH! How long is the course of Septrin?

Thank you. :)

I have enough septrin for 7 days at the moment but that was to be reviewed. The eye drops will start on day 8 anyway so I'll be back at the vet to collect them and can have a chat about extending. :)

Thank you. I asked because I had an interesting discussion with a specialist recently about abx and length of treatment. I think you are wise to think about extending. My vet (Twickenham) routinely gives a course lasting 8 days .....
