  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Cataracts

This is actually about my guinea-pig, Willow but I know a lot of people here have guinea-pigs too so I thought someone might be able to help. Willow's a bit frail now but is still eating and running around as normal. This morning I noticed her eye was lighter and more cloudy and it looked like it had been leaking a bit but when I touched her cheek it wasn't damp, so I thought maybe she had something stuck in her eye earlier and that had caused it to water and now it was clear. Is there much I can do for Willow? As I said she seems absolutely fine and she's still finding her way round the hutch and run ok.

Just to be clear, her eye isn't watering anymore but the eye is still cloudy and lighter. I reread my post and it sounded like the eye is not cloudy anymore.

I was told yesterday that my rabbit had cataracts, but given her age its pretty much to be expected and not to worry about them - I dont know if this is the case for all animals, but I'd not consider surgery to remove them on her, due to age and the stress of it. If your worried it can't hurt to ring the vet for advice though
