Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

When does completely normal eating start after GI stasis/dental?

Sorry - posted on here so much in the last few days! As the question says really!

Ferg came round really well from his dental on Monday and was nibbling hay and greens from very soon after he woke up. Brought him home last night and he's been munching some hay, eaten some herbs and greens and managed about a quarter of an egg cup of pellets over night (very proud of him!). He is also pooing pretty well and they're much bigger than yesterday :)

BUT he's still not eating 100% normally - he hasn't been interested in pellets today (has eaten greens and hay) and is still being syringe fed 2x daily.

How long after a dental/stasis episode do they start eating like normal? Think going to keep on with syringe feeding until he's eating everything properly but just wondered how long this might be! (He's also still on metacam and gut stims)

Thanks! X

It can vary greatly in individual cases. It also depends on the exact dental problem- if there was soft tissue damage/ulceration from molar spurs that would take a few days to heal. The actual procedure can cause some disturbance to the tooth root innervation which again may take a few days to settle down. The TM joint may also be uncomfortable if the jaw was clamped open for some time as would be the case in a Rabbit needing a lot of work doing during a Dental. It has only been about 24 hours since Ferg had his treatment so it is still very early days. Hopefully he will be back to normal by Thursday/Friday of this week.

Fab thanks Jane! There was no ulceration so hopefully he can get better a bit quickly! Xx
