  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Scratched eye?

I've noticed about half an hour ago Otto's left eye was swollen shut and the side of his face was damp.
Rang the out of hours vet and they advised if he's eating and drinking and seems calm to just give him a dose of Metacam and bring him in to see an exotics vet tomorrow.
I've given him a dose of Metacam and he's munching away on hay and has had a sprig of basil. He's happily sat with Pip and seems calm. He's sticking closer to Pip than normal, maybe because he can't see as well.
I've tried to clean his eye area with some gauze and saline and he's getting a bit grunty when I'm doing it. It looks like he's scratched the tear duct, maybe himself or maybe hay as it's very stalky.
Should I carry on trying to clean the area or just leave it? Any advice on how to manage it until the morning and any signs that I need to get him to the vet quicker to look out for?

Personally, if you're going to see a vet tomorrow morning, and it's stressing him to try and clean it, I would leave it and watch him carefully.

Unless you can see something in his eye, I'd just leave it for now and let the vet look. Warning signs to take him in tonight would just be the normal ones - any signs of stasis, breathing funny or anything else that would suggest it's a bigger problem than just his eye.

I take it he doesn't have any lumps on his face or swelling of the genitals and is up to date with his myxi vaccinations? If you do notice any signs like these, make sure you mention them to the vet.
