Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Chronic liver failure, snuffles, dental problems and E.C

Just giving an update on Ben after his vets appointment this morning.

Vet seems to think he is doing okay, his temperature is down and he is still very perky.

His weight has stayed the same as it has been for the last few weeks, so I have been told to carry on feeding him a much grass as he can eat and carry on with the septrin.

He is booked in for another blood test a week Friday to see if his Liver ALT enzyme is lower than before.

Vet thinks he is managing his snuffles well and hopes feeding the grass will keep his teeth at bay for now.

She is also looking in to some supplements that he can have for his liver, I did mention milk thistle Liquid, and told her galens garden sell the leaves he could have.

Did also mention about the ultrasound again but the vet still seems to think it will only be tell them if there are abnormalities such as tumor, so not sure what to do about that one?!

What would you be having an ultrasound for?

It's encouraging to hear that he's maintaining his weight and that he is bright within himself. I am glad that you have discussed giving him supplements with the Vet rather than just doing so. It's always better to do that :) Personally I would wait to see what his next blood test shows before speaking with the Vet again about any further diagnostics. It may be that the next blood test reveals that his Liver enzymes have improved.

Sending lots of vibes for him xx

Thank you both, taking each day as it comes and hoping he stays stable.

The vet has suggested a supplement called samylin which contains the active milk thistle ingredient plus vitamins.

Have you had experience of this? X

Yes, Morse (Rabbit!) had that prescribed at one time after abnormal LFT results and an U/S of his Liver. Trouble is it is manufactured for dogs and so it is meat flavoured, at least it was back when Morse was prescribed it. In the end we (me and Vet) decided to stick with just Milk Thistle and Avipro Plus

Ahh okay I didn't realise this, would the meat flavour cause them to be poorly?

What is aviro plus?

I was hoping the ultrasound might have given more information as to what type of prognosis we were looking at with him. Obviously a biopsy cannot be done to to the anaesthetic issue :(

I haven't yet tried the avipro plus yet jane, Ben has had proxetin pro fibre (pellets) but this alternative may be helpful as he doesn't have to struggle to eat extra food, making things easier for him :)

I don't think the meat flavour would cause him to be poorly, it's just not really appropriate for rabbits, but that's sometimes the case when you use meds meant for cats and dogs.

Avipro Plus is a probiotic. You can read about it here: http://www.vetuk.co.uk/dog-suppleme...probiotic-products-c-5_172/avipro-plus-p-1225

If you prefer not to give the Samylin (though it's good and contains lots of stuff good for liver) then you could try a milk thistle preparation on it's own such as this one:
http://www.baldwins.co.uk/natures-answer-milkthistle-alcohol-free-fluid-extract-30ml
.. it's not preserved in alcohol so you wouldn't have that to worry about and can give it on food.

Two Exotics specialist Vets have recommended the Avipro Plus to me. I have huge respect for both Specialists :) The Rabbit who has it at the moment likes it served in warm peppermint tea   It has to be warm, not cold and certainly not any other flavoured tea. Anyone would think he is fussy..............

Try not to look too far ahead, in some cases it is perfectly possible for the liver to 'repair' itself. That is what occurred for Morse. So I'd just wait to see how his next LFT results go and try not to 'what if' things.

Easier said than done, I know xx

I think you doing an amazing job of looking after him! Keep smiling - he's lucky to have you :D

Thank you both very much. Update on Ben today, he had his first lot of samylin last night soaked in to some cucumber. He seems fine today and is as hungry and bright as he normally is :) he is back to the vets on Friday for a teeth check and a weight check, then back a week Friday for a blood test. So proud of my little man, he is a fighter

It sounds as though he is doing really well within himself, which is brilliant news. I hope that his next check up goes well for him too xx

I have no advice to add, but just wanted to say you are doing a fantastic job, Ben is lucky to have such a devoted carer.

Sending lots of vibes for your special lad. xx

Benji isn't doing so well today, he is still eating and drinking but his balance is a bit strange, has fallen over a few times when he gets excited :( vets tomorrow morning so hopefully they can shine some light onto this.

This could be due to middle/inner ear disease and/or the previously suspected EC. In my unqualified opinion his symptoms fit far more with ear disease than EC.

I hope the Vet can offer more help for him tomorrow.

Good luck with the vets tomorrow. Balance problems would seem to indicate arthritis, E.C. or middle ear infection. Keep your spirits up, you are doing so well xx
