Wet chin... causes - the answer! Post 24

Definitely no leaky hutch as she's in my living room  She lives near the front door which is all glass and does get condensation but a really doubt she hangs about getting wet there but I'm clutching at straws to explain it. No, face look even, except the fact that she is a helicopter bunny anyway so just doesn't seem symmetrical. I've just watched her drinking and she did dip her face in the bowl, she had her face right over the far side of the dish and it was her cheek area that was dipping in the water..... but why now? She's not had a wet face before :? I always go on about ears when I take Tink to the vets with *something* just because her sister has ear problems, but Dinky is very similar in appearance and age so could just as easily be her too. She's in really good spirits, so I'm really hoping its nothing sinister.

Thanks again for your input especially as you are having such a stressful day.

You might have covered this earlier (sorry if you have), but I was thinking maybe some dental issues that mean she has to put her tongue out of the side of her mouth and maybe lean into the water bowl at an angle. Thus wetting one side of her face ...

Clutching at straws too, as it's definitely a mystery :?

Dink Dink has still got a dry chin/face! I keep thinking I could have saved myself the consultation fee by waiting and watching but she had a really good check over and some dandruff checked for mites. I had considered taking all my older bunnies for a 6 monthly check over anyway and that's what she got. It's always very reassuring to know they've had their heart listened to, felt for lumps and bumps and all and nothing is found to be ailing them

It's sometimes worth paying the fee just for peace of mind that all is well :thumb:

So, we finally have answers to this! Dinky drank 1 litre of water in <12 hours on 23 September, had a wet chin, but the day after seemed fine. She had an horrendously wet chin and drinking loads yesterday/today so I took her to the vets.

She has had a dental examination (FHB could see 'something' at the back of her mouth in the consultation). It turns out Dinky had some bits of debris - hay etc wedged right at the back of her mouth in the area where the nerve controlling salivating is, so the salivating would be most likely stimulated by the foreign matter pushing against this, and she wasn't able to get it out herself as it was wedged hence the wet chin. She has had the relevant tooth taken down in the hope that it will prevent this reoccurring (at least for some time). FHB considered taking the tooth out as the back of her mouth is badly inflamed but that might be one for 'if this reoccurs....'. Poor Dinks has probably had that going on intermittently for while. Most of the time she has had a dry face but just occasionally it has been wet for a day or two....

She's now being offered a banquet which I'm sure she will demolish.:D

This probably means I can at last fill in FHB's dental survey ;)

Brilliant that you've managed to find out what this was! Fingers crossed it does the trick.

Both Erin and Dinky (two of my fabulous c8 year olds) have eaten really well overnight and can come home.

Thank you. I really miss her as she is a "bar rattler" asking for treats every time I walk in the room - she's the one now alerting blink Tinky to my presence so she can join in the begging.

Goodness, the things that happen to our buns that the wildies (we think?) don't suffer from! Well they don't have a FHB clinic for a start

I hope she is demolishing her banquet - highly deserved!

Has she been given any meds for the inflammation?

Thank you MM. I didn't get any medication but thinking about it it was very difficult for the nurse to do the hand over because I was in conversation with NHB regarding vet training re rabbits, OOH vets rip off pricing/incompetence etc, so it was a bit difficult for the nurse to get a word in  I didn't get a proper print off invoice either so not sure what Dinky was on whilst there. I should concentrate more and not get so easily distracted

She was very subdued when she first arrived home but after a couple of hours was back to rattling the bars every time I enter the room, it was so quiet without her. I didn't need to top her water bowl up at all this morning 1/2 litre bowl hardly touched :D

ha is this following the facebook thread? I think it's great that she's taking an interest in this, though not sure there's much she can do really.

Yes! He was (according to one of the nurses) "about to explode" regarding something he was dealing with, then ended up passing the time talking to me whilst whatever was being fetched/faxed whatever. He then was talking about the vet training and I said, "It's all kicking off on Facebook" he asked if it was about the vet bill situation and referred to it as a "hand grenade" - he's not wrong. Like you, I think it's wonderful as well as really brave to tackle this topic. Crab Lane prices are amazing, I count myself very, very lucky.

She's back to drinking a lot and has a very wet chin again:cry::cry: so it seems the answer has been found but the solution hasn't been reached... yet.

She can't see FHB until Thursday next week (doing some more CPD this week) and I have Erin's review then so I'm working on the probability that that's the sooners she can be reviewed.

Oh no how annoying! I really thought this was solved now! I know Heather is back on Friday, if that helps.

Thanks. She's probably already booked up!!

Given this has been going on for months intermittently and it probably means she needs another dental, I think I'll wait for Frances for the sake of continuity. ... but good to know Heather is back if I need her in the meantime. (Get a bit anxious when all the 'rabbit vets' are off doing other things!

Hehe, you're really lucky to have a rabbit specialist within reach!!

I'm sorry for the recurrence. Do you think Frances might try an extraction this time, dependant upon findings?

Yeah, I'm assuming that's going to be her next move, I guess it depends what she sees in her mouth.

I do know I'm incredibly lucky. In the run up to last October when Frances officially 'retired' I had a sense of uncertainty but she actually seems to have been more available (even if just for the other vets to consult her) since she 'retired' than she was before  And Ruth and Heather are brilliant so in all, very, very lucky.

We have been using a rabbit competent vet for years supposedly, but it still seems like guess work and a big bill each time. Our rabbit has regular dentals, vets visits for this and that, but they have never stopped her eyes watering, even 2 days after tear duct flush. As a result, it is always visible where her eyes have run. I don't mean to hi-jack the thread, but vets really p#'s me off.

Dinky's issue is complex and unusual that's why the solution couldn't be guaranteed and why she may need more treatment to correct it. The vet in question has vast experience with dental issues and has worked as a rabbit specialist referral vet for many years, but even with her wealth of experience it's not always possible to find the solution first time every time.

If you are to happy with your vet/the treatment then get a second opinion/referral/find another vet. It's what I did over 7 years ago, I now have 100% confidence in my current vet.

Sometimes the physiological condition of the rabbit's head means that the elongated tooth roots will always press on the tear duct and cause watery eyes. I have known this in rabbits I have looked after ...

This is also what is now going on with Erin as she had a lower tooth removed, so the upper tooth has caused problems regarding the tear duct. A tear duct flush was attempted when she had her dental last week but it wasn't possible.

A rabbit of mine had them every six weeks (not with sedation) and eventually the vet gave me all the kit and I did them myself at home! I know FHB prefers to use sedation.

It can be a very ongoing problem, the like of which is solved by a willing partner grooming the affected area
