  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Stye?!

Hi all.
I'm new to this site but I registered so that I can ask a question about one of my rabbits, Lola. The past couple of days I've noticed a spot (like a pimple) on the outside if one if her eyes. It looks like a stye to me. I was just wondering what I can do at home to get rid of this? I've heard a warm 'compress' works..not exactly sure what that is! I've gently pressed a warm, damp flannel on the eye which she protested about (she was chewing the flannel and trying to jump off my lap!) I was just wanting some advice as to what to do about it. I will attach a couple of pictures of the eye. She has been behaving normally and eating and drinking normally which is obviously good!
Many thanks in advance, Nita

You need to take her to a Vet to obtain a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.. Are you in the UK ? If so is your Rabbit vaccinated against Myxomatosis ?

After applying the warm damp flannel the spot has reduced in size which is a relief. I'll get in contact with the vet if it's not gone in a day or two. Yeah I'm in the UK and both Lola and her friend who she lives with have both had the myxomatosis jab :)

Can't see the pictures so it's tough to say. If it's actually on the eye then I'd say you need a vet app as it could be an ulcer or similar and will need drops. If it just a mark on the skin but near the eye I'd be a bit less concerned, though obviously still a vet app if it doesn't continue to improve. If you are worried, you could also call your vet and describe it to them and ask if they think you need an appointment :)
