  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

blindness and loss of co-ordination

New Kit
hi, our 12 year old small rabbit has co-ordination problems he cant stand on hind legs to wash himself or get to his butt area to clean that either and falls on his side when moving and cant get up

well after reading up on it i assumed he had an inner ear infection so booked him into vets, they think its his time *crys* as hes totally blind (i dont believe he is) and as he cant see and therefore is unaware of his legs

wasn't accepting that so requested ear treatment to try received liquid paraffin 3-4 drops and 1.4m of baytril

hes still himself eating/ drinking ect think it stresses us more then him that he falls on side and cant get up sometimes with all 4 legs in the air

has anyone been through this?

Hello - welcome to RU :) Sorry it's not under great circumstances :(

A lot of people on here have been through E.Cuniculi (or E.C as it's shortened to) with their bunnies - there are plenty of threads on here. If you search E Cuniculi in the box in the top right hand corner you will be able to find lots of threads and information. Obviously it is slightly different for you as your bun is 12 years old and blind, but hopefully you'll be able to get some idea of how long this may continue/what to expect from these threads.

Lots of vibes for your bunny.

Did the Vet rule out arthritic problems effecting his mobility ?

Loss of balance can be due to a skeletal problem (arthritis) aswell as a neurological one (middle ear disease)

Did the Vet prescribe a non steroidal anti inflammatory aswell as the Baytril ?

I assume the Vet made sure his eardrums were intact before advising you to put Liquid Paraffin into them ?

nope only the 2 meds were given no follow up appointment either and that was a supossibly rabbit savvy surgery and did ask to be seen by someone who knew about rabbits

he looked in his ears mostly with his fingers watched him walk on floor and felt his legs was impressed by his crossing front legs when picked up although hes always done that is the paraffin bad should i not use it ekk!?

hes not in pain no teeth grind or aggressiveness from him at all just as sweet as ever if he don't like something he stomps big time and charges after a grunt none or that all all
